Boy, you're living dangerously... I thought satellite TV
was the worst (worse than cable), but I guess as long as
you are not personally close to wherever the dish is
installed, you might be okay.

Just make sure that when they are looking for a place
to install the dish, that it's not near any place that
you spend a lot of time!

This is an interesting topic. Last night I was thinking about everything
invisible that goes on in the air and then I thought about satellites
and how they might affect us. You can't avoid satellite beams, as they
are all over the earth, 24 hours a day. I wonder if they will do any
harm at the long term?

What the guy told me at satellite co is that the the waves are going through you at all times anyway?  I don't know. I know when I was staying in a remote area they had satellite tv & it did not bother me but the electric wasn't dirty there. Loni

Loni,

I'm new to this list. Sorry I didn't write an intro. I had satellite a few times. I just had mine taken out. I reacted to it every time. I found out the shared receivers have a wireless connection. The clue is the antenna. I felt somethingin the room or outside where it was.

I had 2 other times. Reacted to it but didn't know what is was then.  Got worse as I got older.  Had fiber-optics & regular cable, didn't notice any reaction.

I don't know for sure, but an article says wired fiber optics is supposed to be safer. I'll send it.

I don't think you need to worry about the waves... I think you need to
worry about the equipment they install, both the dish (which I think has
a powered part) and the channel selector box.

I guess there will be a receiver box at every tv. I would put the dish as far away as I can. It would only be transmitting when the tv is on correct?

How does it operate? Is it a wireless transmission or through wiring?  No clue.

Well I have cable & it has been ok. I wanted to switch to satellite because I can use it in the motorhome then & it is less expensive than cable.

I am nervous nelly however!  Loni

Hi Kathy!

Welcome to the group!

Ok so the receivers at each tv have a wireless connection so they will be communicating with each other?

You said the clue was the antenna. Do you mean the actual satellite?  I can place that probably anywhere outside so that it is far enough away from the house. Were you saying that your reaction was in the room closest to where the satellite was outside?

I really don't know what fiber optics is?

I have cable right now so I'm assuming it's the digital cable that Marc has.

Do they run wires from the satellite to the receivers or how do they all connect? I know I have a lot of questions!  So sorry!  Loni

Well, having never had satellite TV, I'm not sure... I assumed that
everything was wired together (receiver boxes and the dish), but
based on that other report, perhaps not?

Re: Satellite TV versus Cable

I read on the internet that the satellite receives the signal & then converts it to a signal that can be transmitted through cable to the receiver inside. Then receiver sends signal to tv.

Have a lot to consider it seems. Loni

Even if your hardwired, the converters have an antenna which is wireless.

Re: Satellite TV versus Cable

You could have it in the back of your yard.

It's on when the converter boxes are on.  Updates are sent in the middle of the night. If you program  the DVR for a show overnight you have to have the main box on.

With satellite you loose transmission in a thunderstorm or some bad weather.

It comes back, but you don't have it w regular cable unless there's an outage w their satellite

Loni,

Thanks, I only know from having one. The antenna is on the converter boxes. I felt something as soon as they turned it on. I'm okay  w regular cable.

Reg. cable hook up their wires on telephone poles. I don't think it's wireless.

What do they do if your wiring is underground?

I'm sorry I didn't answer this. They can hardwire the converter boxes.

The antenna is built in the converters. You're wireless anyway.
