NEWBIE: Seeking Ways To Shield My Computer

tomfromwisconsin
I am a writer and I need my computer. However, I've been having health problems and my doctor feels EMF is a real concern. She wants me to spend less time online and also look for ways to shield my computer and monitor so I'mnot being exposed so much.

Does anyone here have suggestions for materials I could use or some kind ofbox I could build to protect myself? Any replies appreciated.

Tom

Hi Tom,

There are all sorts of things one can do to tolerate computer use
better, although a lot of that information is buried in the archives of
past messages. I know that some people use shielding materials,
although I have personally avoided that, preferring to stick with other
methods (food choices, dietary supplements, EMF protection devices,
removal of unnecessary metal on my person, choosing a computer that is
less bothersome, moving computer equipment further away, using lower
tech options, removing everything wireless from the house, removing
dimmer switches from the house, removing compact flourescent bulbs from
the house, etc.)

Wow, you have a doc that diagnosed you with EMF sens & didn't think you needed psych help. Good for you. Is it a naturopath?

My girlfriend uses a Q Link polarizer & helps her with the EMF off thecomputer. I think I might try one myself. I think they are returnable if not satified. There are some sheilds you can purchase from lessemf also.

Hi, Tom,

You can write in Word off-line, and save emails to reply to, online pages, and sites to read off-line, as well.  (When I am done online, I totally unplug from DSL and work off-line.)  I personally changed all sorts of settings on my computer, as well--disabled anything to do withwireless and removed wireless cards (Dell techs talked me thru this).  Alot of little things helped me....  I have a laptop and Stewart here told me that the direction that I plugged it in would make a difference(because it has no polarized plug) and so I marked it with a paint pen so I always know which direction it goes.  Also, I unplug my laptop, the DSL box, the ethernet cable into the computer, and the phone line to the DSL box everytime I quit using my computer.  It sounds like a pain, but it takes less than 30 seconds and it makes a big difference for me.  Also, not plugging the laptop into the same outlet as the DSL box makes a difference and keeping all of
these--DSL box, puter, and phone/cord 6 feet apart from each other and notplugged in with or near other electronics makes a difference.  (The Dell techs told me that idea.)

I personally find it better not to use my laptop on battery (mainly because I react badly to charging the battery and have no good place to do this remotely), so I removed the battery entirely and disabled that.  But alot of EMS people like laptops especially for the purpose of using them on battery only.  With the help of the Dell techs, I went systematically over my entire computer and addressed settings--anything which pertainedto wireless, any settings which made the computer work harder (powered up the processor or made the fan kick on), simplified the start-up and shut-down menus, made everything I could possibly make manual rather than automatic, so the computer isn't downloading things, etc, all the time while Iam on it, removed pop-ups, got rid of as many unnecessary programs as possible (or at least made them not start till I wanted them to).....  Allof these are little things, and yet the combined effect was great.  Ican use my
computer without reacting to it at all most of the time now.  If you are involved in detoxing you will need to especially limit your time onlineand on your computer (actually you will need to limit anything involving electricity).  I only react to my computer now when I detox.  I also use supplements, "ground" myself, and do various energy exercises, all of which have helped me.  One of the best things you can do is unplug everything you can in your house and only plug things in when you are actually using them.  Beyond that, shutting off breakers at your electrical panel when you can do so is also very beneficial.  These measures can help your body restabilize, especially if you are able to detox your body successfully and improve your nutrition during this same period.  Everybody is a little different as to why they have EMS, but toxic exposures, amalgam fillings, as well as bad nutrition, and gut damage are all examples of things we often
have to address to get better.

Good luck and good health,
Diane

I continue to note a big improvement by having the laptop unplugged.
I have multiple batteries I can charge when I'm not there.

Having the internet unplugged when not needed is a good idea,
because you are creating a connection between the power
line and the phone line. That allows a big ground loop.

Thanks for the many replies to my post.

In my profession, I absolutely must be online. I don't have the option to simply remain offline.

I keep thinking that there must be a way to build some kind of box for the tower component of the PC, and then shield the monitor. I also understand the need for distance (keeping myself further from the whole works).

Has anyone here built anything like this? What kind of materials would I need? I did browse lessemf, but I'm wondering if any of the supplies I need could be purchased more cheaply and in larger quantities elsewhere.

Thanks for the replies, and I hope to continue this discussion.

from DSL to cable internet? I found cable internet to be worse,
but it could have been the specific modem I was using. I ended
up going back to DSL.

Of course, you may find the opposite to be true... :-)

Hi Eli,

Have you actually tried one of these?  Anything called "broadband" is using wireless technology by accessing cell towers via a broadband card in your computer.  I had to disable and remove my broadband card, it bothered me just being there.

Not saying others would have a problem with these, but I did.

My 2 cents,
Diane

Never tried one, never will.

Devices such as that broadband card, along with 4G
will be devastating for us electrosensitives. Every
living being on the planet will be streaming video
over their cell phones soon. We're doomed.

Re: NEWBIE: Seeking Ways To Shield My Computer

Does anyone have further thoughts on this? I'm still exploring all options as I know that computers will be part of my daily life. I'd like to exploreall options for shielding and other alternatives.

Someone at a local store also thought I could get a projection unit that would put the content of my work up on the wall - minus the monitor. That would allow me to work in a room with nothing but a mouse and keyboard. Have any of you found equipment like this?

Maybe if you rear project it -- it seems like a projector would need to
be close to you if it is front projected.

I'm using a 26" LCD HDTV which I can easily see from 4 - 5 ft away, as the
resolution is only 768 x 1366.
