Dirty Electricity or Neighbors wifi?

chupa38
I have felt great for weeks in my own house.  We got rid of wifi router. No cellular is on.

Suddenly 2 days ago started feeling the symptoms.

Used my meter and found my parents tcl roku tv was sending out wifi even though we have it connected through a USB to ethernet adapter. I checked the settings and nowhere to turn off wifi. Had 2 settings device connect and control by mobile apps that I disabled and poof wifi signal vanished from near TV (meter was showing a mghz measurement).

Can dirty electricity create RF readings?

When I use my phone to look for wifi it just shows same networks as before.

Dirty electricity can certainly cause someone to have symptoms.

What reading were you getting from the Roku?  I assume "mghz" is a typo.

Hi! Ty for responding so fast! Sorry meant mhz as in megahertz. It was fluctuating between 1500-1600 sorry did not make a note. This was 2 days ago. Symptoms are horrible today. New one throbbing pain in left side of throat near Adam's apple.

Can dirty electricity produce RF? What is generally a safe RF level (suppose its different for everyone). I've noticed the rf fluctuates greatly from 0.0015 to 0.0057 to 0.0071 where I normally sit in the living room. If I measure near the windows it shoots up to 0.0410 mw/m2.

There have been complaints about 5G lately, with new C-Band towers being activated.  Not sure what else might be "new", other than new satellites being launched/deployed.

I'm not familiar with the way that Roku functions now, but several years ago I had purchased a Roku set from Costco which stated on the box that it could be setup with either Wifi or Ethernet.  I set it up with an Ethernet connection with physical cables to my TV and computer and rapidly detected that I was feeling RF symptoms.

I had an HF35C at the time which indicated that both the Roku set by the TV and the handheld controller were pulsing RF constantly.  Called Roku customer service and after spending a long time on the phone with them, a technician finally admitted that the wireless emitters could never be turned off and always remained on even when an Ethernet connection was setup.

Ah thank-you so much! Does this apply to when the TV is turned off too?

Actually, Roku updated their firmware, so there are some settings that turn off the RF.  The only remaining issue is that you need to get the infrared remote and not the RF remote, since the RF remote won't work if you turn off all the RF.

(this is talking about the Roku boxes, I don't have any experience with the TVs with Roku built in)

I should have read your comments better.  I'm curious what is the RF meter you're using that shows the exact frequency range of the signal?  I have an HF35C and Safe & Sound Pro II which only indicate the strength of the signal in (micro)uw/m2 in the range of 200 Mhz - 12 Ghz.  Your measurements are in milliwatts per m2 correct?  It gets confusing.

I have measured RF on both of my meters from lights which are on dimmer switches when turned on and also from lights which are on an incorrectly wired electrical circuit.  Dirty electricity can be heard with a cheap AM battery operated radio coming from keyboard, mouse, computer screen and many other electrical devices.  In the US, dirty electricity is a multiple of 60 hertz, i.e, 120 Hz, 180, 240, and up.  In Europe it would be multiples of 50 Hz.

This site indicates that RF range for submarines is as low as 30 hertz!

Sorry, I do not remember if it still emitted RF when turned off as I took it back to the store as soon as I found out that it was emitting when turned on.

Heh, I was going to ask what meter was being used as well... although I assumed it was one of those Cornet meters (e.g. Cornet 88).  Those show frequencies, don't they?

Thanks, Marc.  That's good info about Roku updating firmware.  Is it hard to find an infrared remote for Roku?

I bought a Roku infrared remote on eBay.  It's interesting that newer boxes support both RF and infrared remotes, but they only include the RF remote.

My Roku infrared remote says its model RC32, so it's like this one:

Yes coronet ed88t plus fwiw. It only seems to show frequency whenI get it near some kind of wifi, bluetooth, or cellular.

I think the remote is infrared because if you're not aiming it right at the set in the right way it doesn't activate the set. I think that means it's infrared right? In other words if the center of the TV is blocked it doesn't seem to actuate functions on the TV it's on the TV.

Yes, infrared remotes can easily get blocked, and you have to have line of sight with the receiver.  RF remotes on the other hand go right through / around obstacles.

So I can understand why someone would want an RF remote.  But I don't.  :-)

Yes, I can see the value of being able to see what the frequency is, if it's right next to a cellphone.  Because then maybe I could make some sense about why I do better with one carrier vs another carrier.  As I assume they are using different frequencies, even though the phone is the same.

Thanks again for your reply! I'm using the coronet ed88t plus recommended to me by a member here. Yeah your right milliwatts per m2 for the measurment but also shows a mhz measurement  to (I'm a complete idiot when it comes to this stuff).

The place I'm living in is a 1920s home on a corner street.  My parents tell me the wiring had to be redone. The contractors hired failed the first inspection but then fixed the issues.

If it is dirty electricity it did not seem to bother me this badly before.  But people in the house change habits and suddenly a plug that was never used is getting heavy use from a corded hand held vacuum fwiw.

What carrier are you using out of curiosity? Interestingly before this whole rf/ehs sensitivity started I was using a samsung galaxy note 9 on Att network. Switched to Mint mobile to save money.  They use t mobile. There was about 2 weeks when I could not use the att phone and then symptoms vanished and stayed away for over a year. I've used 2 different models of phone with mint. Motorola G Power and a Samsung S9. Although I think either being a condo dweller for more then half my life blissfully ignorant of rf/emi dangers might be responsible. There was a possible mold contamination in our duct work as well (although never positively Identified just wired musty smell, etc).
