new wifi meters from xcel energy

Paul Coffman
XCel Energy is implementing something called CellNET in MN, WI and the
dakota's. My house just got converted, the way it works is now the
electricity meter on your house sends out a wifi signal every 5 min to their
collector for all this smart grid stuff. I tried to talk to the power
company about getting a meter that say only broadcasts once a day but they
said that was impossible. This will eventually impact everyone in the US,
meter-readers are going away. Has anyone else dealt with the power company
on this? For now i'll just shield it at least partially, problem with
shielding is if they can't get a signal they will come out to see what is
wrong.

You can pack it in aluminium foil, or when they make trouble, you can shield
the wooden metercabinet with aluminium foil on the inside.

That is nobody can forbid you.
In France a lot of meters are place in plastic cabinets on the outside,
wall of the houses.
So if they do not want you to do that, they may place the meter outside your
house.

My electrical company allowed me to put a direct phone line
communication in to report the usage once a month.
The water/gas people would not allow it and have the plates that beep
every 30 seconds!
It is not a matter of technology, it is a matter of will. It we raise
enough stink to the right people we can get what we want.
Now, who has the time for that?

Electric meters are bad sources of EMFs anyway. So it might be a good time
to get it moved to a far corner
of the property, behind a metal fence. But that will cost
a couple thousand dollars or more.

If you do shield it with metal screen or whatever that allows them
to see it and doesn't touch the meter, you might have a case that
what you did is legal, unless they have some easement allowing
for a transmitter. Of course the law can change and the utilities
are very powerful.

It might be smarter to make the shield like a dish point to whereever
they receive the signal.

Bill -

Yes I was thinking that, have the foil or whatever open at one end to go
toward the collector. Thanks.
