desktop computers

Paresh
I just sat at a friend's desk for a while & was surprised at how quiet the cpu tower was & that it didn't seem to bother me. She said they have come a long way. I don't think I am as sensitive as I used to be but it depends...I can tell if the refrigerator is on when it's 60 feet away & an air purifier in my housemate's bedroom was very hard on me.

The point is I pay 3x the price for a laptop since I have been able to tolerate them better & am thinking next time I may try a desktop & just move the cpu further away...
blessings,
Paresh

Very often it is not the CPU, but mainly the computer screen display which
can emit VLF frequencies, which can be very nasty to electrosensibles.

I think the power supply and the fans and disc all matter, and the EMFs
they make tend to contaminate the keyboard too. As far as the computer
itself, a small metal box should be a plus, but then it's the cables
(which may or may not be shielded and have ferrites). If all that is good,
then it's the display and the chips in the mouse and keyboard. If it's
all grounded to a clean ground. Battery power is a big plus (as long as
it doesn't have a switching voltage converter), but there are still all the
other issues..

mY daughter bought a battery operated fan that has flexible blades with neon
type lights in one of the blades that create a lovely light display when the
fan blades spin. When she operated the fan 2m away from my plug-in usb
digital TV stick the picture on the PC went heywire I tried this on my normal
digital TV from 2ft away and the same thing happened ! That's a turn up for the
books, wouldn't it be nice if this did the same to mobiles ?

How about hooking the PC up to a new pico projector running on batteries,
expensive but could be a good alternative to the screen problem.

Thanks for the input. Yes I always thought fans were a problem + the noise too. How is the display for a desktop different from my laptop LCD - more powerful??

Have you tried a Pico projector?

They look promising for people like us. That
and maybe the netbooks with 32 nm atom processors
which will be available by the end of 2009.

AH! A diamond in the rough!

I've been saying all along, each piece of equipment, or each circuit
board design, is different. Some are noisy and drive you away in 5
minutes, others are very tolerable for hours.

Did you find out what brand and model it is?
Motherboard ______________
Power supply ______________
and Video card ______________
are the big offenders, or keystones to the puzzle.

Knowing those details, you could duplicate the base components of the
system and have a good chance of getting another quiet computer yourself.

Just being a laptop doesn't guarantee anything less in RF emissions,
only the lack of a field from the AC transformer (when on battery power).

No I don't know the brands...also it's hard to trust my reaction without repeated exposure to the same devices because I can feel quite differently from day to day. Some days (bad days) I am much more sensitive than others. I don't know if this is common for other people?

Hi, Paresh,

Yes, I am the same--I react more and with worse symptoms on particular days.  For me, it depends alot on how much I happen to be detoxing (more detox=worse symptoms) and when did I last take my epsom salts soak (I react much worse just after having the bath, then I am usually much better for2 to 5 days, then I get worse again and know I need to take another soak.)  It also makes a difference if I am more ill in other ways than from emfs.  Supplementation and good nutrition make me more resilient and less reactive also.

My 2 cents,
Diane
