computers, cell phones, cell towers and wifi

Patricia
well, i think i have made an observation that might
be helpful to some of you.  it has been helpful to me.

when there is a computer of any description near me,
i can tell due to my discomfort... usually in the area
of my head... pressure against the skull... or stabbing
pain.  also, i cannot sleep well... so many things...

what i finally determined was that my desktop computer
is ok and others - even my same generation laptop -
are not.  what is the difference?  well, i finally realized
that computers are now equipped (and cellphones have
always been) with a 'homing' program that lets them
be found if they are lost or stolen.  my laptop was ok
for years until i put a new operating system on it due
to new software that required it... but once it had that
upgraded operating system on it, it too was toxic to me.
i finally took that operating system off and restored it
to the original operating system (thank goodness for
roommates who are IT experts)... and it no longer
bothers me.  it is no longer searching for a cell tower
to report to... or however it works.  it is just sitting
here, politely offline, and if it ever goes online again
it will be via ethernet.  but new ipads, macbooks,
cell phones, etc... they are really dangerous for me
to be around.

i use Mac OSX 10.6.8 on my desktop - and now, again
on my macbook pro...  it makes all the difference.  if
i need to ever upgrade, perhaps i'll just get one of
those little 'netbooks' and wrap it in mylar when not
in use... why, oh why, do they have to keep "improving"
things?  my roommate IT tech guy loves 10.6.8 and
also unix.  one of the professors at the U where he
works bought a new mac and hated the new operating
system and wanted to go back to 10.6.8.

here's to "good enough technology"!  :)
love, patricia

Patricia, is there no way to disable the radio on your Mac laptop?  On the PC laptops we have, one can disable the wireless radio with a switch, or you can disable the drivers for the radio from within the operating system.

i don't know, marc.
i really like 10.6.8, so i don't think i'll be worrying about it.
the only problem is that 'progress' is mandatory in our
world and i am weary of change at this point... just want
to use my old computer.  well, i also love my 25-yr-old
car, as i have expressed before here, because it does not
have all those electronic bells & whistles, but it appears
that i am going to have to say goodbye to it... after 25
years, cars tend to disintegrate... as do all things.  :(
so i might have to change my computer someday, and if
i do, then i'll look into disabling the 'radio'.  is the switch
you use a physical switch?

Patricia,

How would I know if I had this? I think my computer bothers me but not sure. Mine is all wired....no wifi. My computer has been telling me to upgrade windows. Is that something I should avoid? My computer 'expert' is my son and he poo poos my sensitivity.

Patricia,

Turn off the built in Airport. There is a triangle icon on the top click on it to see if it's on and you can click to turn it off

Yes, our Lenovo laptops have a physical switch to turn off the wi-fi radio.  Unfortunately, a physical switch can also get accidentally switched back on, so not a perfect solution.  Going into the operating system and disabling the device drivers seems to be a more permanent solution.

Microsoft is trying to get people to upgrade to Windows 10, so it wouldn't surprise me if you were seeing those messages.  I found a page online that told me how to disable those messages, so I plan on sticking with Windows 7 for the forseeable future.
