charter cable internet worse than dsl

Paul Coffman
I switched from DSL to charter cable internet and had massive problems with
it - basically couldn't sleep. Can anayone think of why cable internet
would emit something that dsl wouldn't? Cable without the internet just for
the TV is fine - something happens when I put the internet on that really
affects me. Thanks.

What kind of modem are you using?
Is it wireless?
Does it has antennas on it?

Hi Paul,

With or without the cable plugged into the "modem" or internet equipment?

Powered on or off?

I guess one could compare the voltage inside a cable versus
the voltage in the phone lines. When touching the end of
a cable, I've gotten a shock. I don't recall that happening
with a phone line.

With or without the modem - the modem makes it a bit worse, but not by
much. I cancelled it and went back to my DSL. At my father's place I
could never sleep - he has cable internet and I got exactly the same
feeling, I just never thought that would be the problem.

Is it not that the cabling simply carries so much info that it becomes more
leaky/radiant with all manner of spikey emissions ?

Another thought - when on DSL it used phone cables, maybe the Chartercable
pulls in alot more electropollution due to its route to the house, are they
sharing the bandwidth with others and so the signal is polluted etc..

I'm curious what an engineer would say.

I'm thinking that ideally a coax cable is a lot less leaky than a phone
line. But the coax probably has much higher frequencies, and in practice
may not be properly grounded or may have bends or kinks that are too
tight? Conceivably the cable is not such great quality and radiates
especially to nearby metal wires or objects that act like antennas?

It seems like I read somewhere that some people have problems with
digital cable TV but not analog cable....

Interesting,

Can you verify the cable is disconnected now?
Does this cable also provide TV signals? or was it installed only for
internet connection?

Doesn't the cable have a ground shield?
If so, did you try grounding that wrapper?

No I guess i can't actually verify it since i had to give the cable modem
back. It wasn't wireless. THere's no shielding, 23 year old cable wires
i'm sure. Cable provides tv signals and that doesn't bother me.

I do think that bends in the cable will radiate higher frequencies more
so than lowish frequencies, and clearly 23 years ago no one anticipated
running internet on there as well as TV...

Re: charter cable internet worse than dsl

In reply to this post by Paul Coffman
I have measured with some TV cables, that they emit 30 kHz signals.
And, electrosensibles may react to those horrible signals.

The ssame goes for shielded cables in housing.
You may keep the electrical fields inside the cables itsself, but they are
free at the wall sockets.
I have also found that on higher floors in buildings, the shielding layer
works like an antenna, and picks up high frequency signales from mobile
phone masts, and transport those signals.

So, it is important that those cables are well grounded, and the wall socket
housings also.

I think it's going to depend on exactly where the wires sit in the box etc.
One probably should not worry about signals right at the outlet;
just don't sleep right next to one. Ed Leeper's book recommends measuring
about 8" from the wall.

If you've seen the new bioInitiative report, it is clear that you want < 1mG
in your rooms. If you share a wall you may also need to think about dirty
power. I did get an AC isolator (model 475) from iceradioproducts.com.
It took a long time for delivery. It works great. They also sell a whole
house isolator that an electrician would install.

1 mG is 1 milligauss. It's a threshold for AC magnetic fields.

The isolators, like from iceradioproducts, are filters. There are lots
of filters out there. Stetzer filters are capacitors which short out
high frequencies. The iceradioproducts ones (which are not pretty
to look at, but work very well for the money) include ferrites to block
(reflect)
the high frequencies. They produce almost no magnetic fields compared
to Stetzer filters (but Stetzer's are useful to stop RF that's already in
the
wires without needing an electrician. If you use the isolators where stuff
is plugged in your Stetzer reading should be great unless RF is coming
from the neighbors...

Re: charter cable internet worse than dsl

This post was updated on .
Earthing (we call it grounding in the US) will get rid of DC and very
low frequencies. It might help with RF but a good RF ground involves
more than a wire and a metal stake. And to ground the hot wire
you need a capacitor or you've got a short. A Stetzer filter is just
a big capacitor that plugs in to a US outlet, so it's trivial to install,
but offhand I don't know if it's safe for 220 V. (There's also a little
resistor built in for added safety).

If you can find a place that carries supplies for short wave radio
operators they may have filters meant for UK. Tell them you
think your fridge is interfering with your radio. A place that carries
ferrite cores or earthing straps (or shortwave sets) is the place to
inquire.
