activated charcoal

SArjuna

Someone suggested activated charcoal for clearing mercury.   Something
to remember when using actiated charcoal is that it has such tremendous
absorption power that it also sucks up a lot of your nutrients if it is in your
digestive system at the same time as your food.

Hi Shivani,

My dentist gave me charcoal during my first mercury amalgam removals (2 fillings). He
didn't realize I was also taking cilantro, green algae, and a supplement called Mercury
Detox, at my naturopath's recommendation. I'm speculating that the charcoalmay have
cancelled out the supplements; in any case I had a strong headache that night and for the
next day.

After that, my dentist realized I was taking the other supplements and decided I didn't
need to take the charcoal. For my next two sessions (five fillings) I skipped the charcoal
and did much better: no headaches.

I recently tried 2 different brands of activated charcoal, and felt terrible
after trying them both. I don't know why, but its pretty typical that I
would have a bad reaction to something... :-)

Oh, I've also done some more experimentation with the detox foot fads (Shu Li).
The first night went okay with 1 pad, but on nights 2 and 3, I got such nasty
chest discomfort that I think I'm going to have to stop (or at least cut down
the frequency to once a week/2-weeks/month...)

At least I have nothing bad to report about the raw milk -- except that its
not as tasty on subsequent days as it is while the frozen container is
thawing... :-)

milk shipping

They freeze it so it will better survive the shipping process. You can
ask them to ship the milk or colostrum unfrozen if you can receive it
in less that 2 days and plan on drinking it soon thereafter. The taste
and consistency is much smoother unfrozen.

Our experience was the opposite. Sue wasn't told to take much in the way of
supplements when her amalgams were removed, and suffered a bad reaction.
Since then she has taken activated charcoal for any operation that could
release mercury and it seems to have worked.

A physical explanation we have heard is that the liver eliminates nasties by
two routes; bile and urine. Bile goes into the bile duct and then into the
gut. However, it's suggested that if you have bad candida or leaky gut, the
mercury can re-absorb into the body. Activated charcoal should stop or
reduce this by mopping up the mercury and holding it until it is eliminated.

It seems very likely though that activated charcoal would absorb supplements
as well; it's an indiscriminate absorbent relying on physical absorption
through its very open, porous structure, rather than any chemical reactions.

My guess would be that activated charcoal is worth taking if you're about to
do a process which could release a lot of mercury or heavy metals from your
body, and you have a known candida or leaky gut problem, but you'd have to
get the timing right if the detox process itself relied on gut absorption..
If taken on its own when not detoxing, it might mop up lots of food
nutrients and leave you feeling weaker, as Shivani points out!

If only we could see inside our bodies . detox seems a lot more complicated
than the books and articles often make out. (As part of my work, I
troubleshoot chemical and process plants, and I reckon our bodies are much
more complex and difficult to understand than anything I normally deal
with!)
