Ultrasone Headphones

steve
Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone has tried Ultrasone Headphones. Their claim to fame is MU Shielding to cut the EMF Levels.
I tested my headphones with a CellSensor EMF Meter and the pads were a hot zone.

Re: Ultrasone Headphones

Martin Kempf
Hi

I have an old Sennheiser open headphone, and a closed ULTRASONE HFI-650.
And it's true that the Ultrasone headphone I can use for hours. With the
Sennheiser I feel bad after 5 minutes...
Additionally, I met the Inventor of Ultrasone (a german company) once,
and he explained me how it works, so yes, in future I will only use
Ultrasone... he is a lot in measuring earthfields, sferics and EM
fields, very concerned.

Interesting. Are there articles you've read that claim this? I'm looking for a pair that would block out infrasound but without batteries near my head. The ones from Bose have batteries right in one of the ear pieces. I didn't think that would be too safe. Anyone else?

Hi All,

I bought a pair last week, and have just started using them. I bought the
Ultrasone Icans versions. I'm not sure I'm can really comment on them just
yet though - it's early days. Unfortunately I've lent all my EMF testing
equipment out to a friend until next weekend, so I can't do any testing yet
either.

I'll send some more views out within next fortnight.

Before owning these I had a pair of Koss Sportapro.

Regards

David

David,
Did you ever test the Koss headphones? I assume it would test high like allheadphones.

Re: Ultrasone Headphones

Martin Kempf
I really love the sound quality of the Ultrasone, compared to the
Sennheiser. I offered another Ultrasone to my mother, a smaller open
one, and the quality is also excellent.

Thanks Martin,
Would the smaller model be the HFI15G?

Re: Ultrasone Headphones

Martin Kempf
Yes, thats right!
The smaller model hurts a little after a time, the pressure in the
middle of the ear.
The closed models have the pressure on the ring around the ear, it can
also be too much after a time, but it's more comfortable...
But I think this is the same mecanical problem of all headphones.

Yes, I saw this too. Supposedly it only reduces emf by 60%. Maybe I'll juststick with the HFI580

Re: Ultrasone Headphones

BiBrun
This sounds like a good find... I would think the
models without "S-logic-plus" would be safer.
Probably a smaller driver would have lower field,
but it also depends how far it is. Also, higher
impedance would mean smaller magnetic field too.

They list these specs at
http://www.ultrasone.com/index_en.php?level=2&CatID=13.80&inhalt_id=83

They all have mu metal except the HFI 15G and 450.

Re: Ultrasone Headphones

Martin Kempf
This is the text from the catalogue:
"The MU-Metal shielding may reduce magnetic radiation by up to 98%
compared to current headphones"

How does S-Logic™ Natural Surround Sound work?
S-Logic™ sends music around your head not just into it, because this
technology uses decentralised driver positioning. Did you know
that you use and need the outer ear for your 3-dimensional understanding
to define the direction and distance where a sound
comes from? Instead of hitting the inner ear directly, with S-Logic™ the
signals are reflected off the surface of the outer ear in different
directions before entering the auditory canal to create a natural
3-dimensional sound. S-Logic™ is the only headphone system which
addresses your entire sense of hearing. S-Logic™ does not change your
personal hearing, it intensifies it for your individual needs and
listening pleasure. S-Logic™ does neither need artificial echo nor
digital sound processing or cross over run time delay.
You can hear the sound just the way the sound engineer has mastered it.

S-Logic™ Natural Surround Sound - To hear is like to see: 3-dimensional
Unique? Yes! Revolutionary? Definitely! The patented S-Logic™ technology
is described as Natural Surround Sound. No other digital
surround system can compare with this standard. As the sound of normal
headphones will sound direct and even on both sides, the
S-Logic™ system pushes the sound around your head! It appears as though
you are listening to speakers meters away. Even at very
low levels, this spacious sound allows you to hear precisely. And on
top, the S-Logic™ technology does not require additional equipment!

ULE-technology (Ultra Low Emission) - MU Metal shielding
To understand what ULE-technology does, you need to know that drivers in
normal headphones produce low-frequency magnetic
fields as they convert electrical signals into the acoustic signals you
hear as music. Although the scientific jury´s still out as to damage
this magnetic radiation could do to people who wear headphones for long
periods of time, Ultrasone headphones employ the
ULE-technology. ULE stands for Ultra Low Emission. Originally Ultrasone
developed this technology mainly for professionals as they do
spend half of their lives in headphones. The average magnetic field
emission of many headphones is more than four times the maximum
of recommended levels. The MU-Metal shielding may reduce magnetic
radiation by up to 98% compared to current headphones.
Not only PRO headphones from Ultrasone but also HFI and DJ models are
equipped with the MU-Metal shielding as standard.
This patented technology has stood the test of international review and
is recommended by technical surveillance organisations.

Safer hearing
S-Logic™ does not only create a Natural Surround Sound sensation.
S-Logic™ allows at the same time a reduction of sound pressure
levels at the eardrum by up to 40% (3 - 4 dB). This may reduce the risk
of hearing damage while ensuring hours of fatigue-free listening.
However, Ultrasone generally advises not to listen to music at high
volumes to prevent hearing damage.

Re: Ultrasone Headphones

steve
That's why their info is confusing. The 15G and 450 HFI Models do not contain the MU Shielding.

Re: Ultrasone Headphones

In reply to this post by steve
Hi : ) I have the Ultrasone Headphones that have the maximum amount of EMF
reduction (the Pro line) - there is a version that blocks about 70% and one
that blocks about 97% (this is the Pro line). They are expensive, but for
me worth it because I can use headphones again. Also they are really
durable and I am very hard on material objects! And they fold up for
carrying.

The iCans were invented for use w/ mp3 players. Don't know how much emfs
they shield, but if they are as good as the Pro Headphones, I wish I could
afford to buy them because the downside to the pro headphones is they're not
made for walking around- they're the size of stereo headphones- people would
definitely look at you funny.

They are the "real deal". They are primarily made for radio djs, and people
in the music and film industry whose work requires them to wear headphones
for hours and hours. I got them from a film company in Los Angeles. As
noted, they are internally shielded with Mu metal- the only thing I am aware
of that really does block emfs.

I have a trifield meter and tested them and a pair of headphones belonging
to my husband. The louder the sound coming out of any headphone, the higher
the electric and the magnetic field will be. That said, the regular
headphones had extremely high emfs- I remember the magnetic field was at
least 100 milligauss. The Ultrasone was 0 milligauss, even if I turned the
music up to the loudest it would go.

Best,

Taliesen W.

Re: Ultrasone Headphones

forgot to say, you can get them cheaper than the company sells them for,
either in the U.S. or Germany. I paid a lot less than what UltrasoneUSA was
selling them for, again from a film company in L.A. Oddly, they were still
shipped from UltrasoneUSA. I guess there IS a big price mark-up on these,
at least if you get them directly from Ultrasone. Google around for the
best price if you're interested.

Its too bad they don't use the mu shielding across the line. The $89 15G sounded good but still emitted emf.
