I had tried my laptop on battery without ground a few times before, but I always felt worse, so I kept it on AC power. My AC adapter is a 3-prong type, so it provides at least somewhat of a path for electricity to flow out of the laptop.
What I did was hook it up to a ground rod outside. I put the rod in the ground and the wire goes to a pin that is screwed into the VGA port, which was pulled out of a VGA cable end. This was about a week ago. Ever since then I used it at least 90% on battery only. One of my main symptoms was my face burning, like from sunburn, and it almost never happens now! Just wanted to share this with anyone using a laptop.. Grounding could make a big difference, and battery mode as well. I would've never figured this out if it wasn't for my shortwave radio. On SW4, it picks up all the noise from the AC Supply going into the keyboard and mouse. The next thing the radio picks up is the Cat5 cabling, as data flows on it. I found listening to online music made me feel worse, and I had no idea what's happening. I now suspect it's due to the downloading. Heavy downloading causes biggest amounts of noise on the radio, as all the data bits are turned into electrical impulses going through the cabling. I try to keep my data usage to a minimal amount until I can figure out an optical solution. SC to RJ45 optical adapters exist for affordable prices. Cables are a bit pricey though. I don't know how bad the small piece of Cat5 from the adapter to the laptop would be though. There is only one adapter I found to get internet directly through SC optical into a laptop USB, but it's expensive, part # TN-USB3-SX-01(SC) . Around $300US. |
Hello congrats on the progress with the laptop. I have the some issues with the CAT5 + Radio news when downloading. I am going to Cut one CAT5 cable and connect the CAT's Internal shielding layer to the ground. I think this will help. I have tried grounded shielded cable and there was no difference unfortunately. The radio picks up the noise about 1 foot from the cable whether it's shielded or not. The router also sends the noise into the power grid if it's powered from the AC. You can try to solder a wire on the metal plug end far enough so it can still plug in, instead of cutting the cable sleeve. I still think optical with it's own adapter is needed to completely eliminate this. Hopefully that one doesn't make noise also. Also, the ethernet card itself in your computer will make the noise also, even if it's not coming from the cable. That noise will end up on the USB line and into the keyboard/mouse. If I disable the card, noise stops on my keyboard/mouse. Enable it, noise is back. If you can use a IR keyboard/mouse, or isolate them in some other way it should help. |

Yes, you will find that if you use Shielded Cat7 cable,
and ground it, you will reduce the emissions from both the wire and the
router/computer that it connects.

what song were you listening to? :-p

Many.. youtube mixes, and Shoutcast radio stations. Youtube is worse, winamp a bit better. I can listen to local Mp3 fine. I think it's a combination of cpu heat, fan turning on, and cat5 noise. I am going to try an optical USB adapter for Internet, but still waiting for the parts to arrive. |

My Fiber Optic USB came today, I'll let you know if this ends up helping,.. I was able to put together the entire system for a pretty decent price including 100ft optical cable. The USB connects to the fiber that goes to a fiber media converter box which is connected to the router. This setup is really cool if you ever need long distance internet sharing. The box goes up to 30KM if connected to another box like it.. and the 100ft fibers can be spliced together to get a longer length. |
