Something else to try

Snoshoe

Since many of seem to have problems with low adrenal and thyroid, which may be caused by, or exacerbated by our ES, and a cause of some of our symptoms, such as the burning or "hotflashes" experienced even by men, this might be something to try.

I've thought for quite some time that low thyroid is more the cause of said
hotflash than say low estrogen. So, I decided to give black cohosh a try, and
while it says it can take several weeks, it's only about a week, and it does
seem to be lessening some of my symptoms.

Doing a search, it is indeed useful for low thyroid and calming the adrenals, though it seems not much research has been done. (I have found largish doses of
coleus forskholli useful also for low thyroid, though it gets expensive that way.)

I did a quick search through the group here, and it was mentioned for the heart problems also, a couple years back.

From the little reading I could find so far, it is not estrogenic, but it seems to tone down parts of the brain that are overstimulated by emf to us, so if it does that, lessens stress on the adrenals, and supports thyroid function in small amounts, it could prove to be helpful to many.

It's relatively inexpensive, so might be worth a try. I'm taking about 50%
more/day than they suggest, after initial try to see if I had any adverse
reactions.

By the way, does anyone on here have hyperthyroid?

Something to be aware of re black cohosh which I was reading about was that apparently it is contraindicated in people with liver problems - so more research might be needed on that aspect if anyone was thinking of taking it

Yes I have more signs of hyperthyroidism than anything else - very slim, raised heartbeat when near EMFs, get very hot (after a day on the PC), etc etc. I am also get terrible liver pains when near EMFs so perhaps the black cohosh might not be a good idea for me.

Re: Something else to try

Thanks for the replies.

The reading I did, I think from nih.gov or pubmed said the liver problems were caused by supplements from China marketed as black cohosh, but were not, so reputable company is important, but it would still be good to be careful if you have liver problems, and take milk thistle too.

The dose on the brand I got, Remifemin (Had the least amount of additives on what was available in store, and I just wanted to try before buying any bulk raw amount.) says to take 1 tablet 2x/day, theirs is a concentrated extract.

My herb book says "boil 2tsp. of rootstock in 1 pint water. Take 2-3Tbs. 6x/day, cold.  Tincture is 10-60 drops."

It also says in uses, it is "a mild sedative to the nervous system, but can act as a cardiac stimulant."  My heart seems more calm at the moment, so I can't say it's had any effect that way.

Well, I'll get a good test tonight at a meeting, and see how I feel after, with all the nasty cellphones around.

So, it's no cure, but it may help with symptom relief for some people.
