Snoshoe's refrigerator

SArjuna
Some time ago Snoshoe mentioned that he feels better when his frig is
not only off, but unplugged, even if the circuit is turned off at the breaker
box.
The thing is that even when a circuit is off current can still be
induced onto its metal conduit from other circuits, even from water pipes. This
can result in the high frequencies of electrical pollution being braodcast from
the circuit and anything plugged into it.
This is why it's not enough to turn off an electric blanket, but it must
be unplugged, and even removed from the vicinity of electric/magnetic fields.

When we were in the process of actually removing one conduit from our
sytem, the local electrician who was doing it for me asked me to check it with a
gaussmeter while the conduit was still attached to the breaker box vs. after
he detached it. The circuit was off in both instances, of course. The
magnetic field on the conduit increased the moment he disconnected it from the
breaker box and it was just hanging there, not yet pulled off the basement
wall. The reason is that current was being induced into it from the conduits
above and below it. Once it was no longer in contact with the breaker box,
the bit of grounding it had had was lost and it actually had more current on
it.

I suggest that Snoshoe's refrigerator has been a scapegoat.

One example of this is that we found an electric field from our washing
machine even when it was off and completely unplugged. It seemed to be due
to the water pipes connecting in at the back, and was reduced when we
improved the earthing on the water system.

Hi Shivani,

This is a very interesting story. I would like to understand it better.

When you said:

In the "before" condition, do you mean that the wire was disconnected but
the conduit remained, or do you mean the wire and the conduit were both
still connected?

Also, where along the circuit where you making measurments? Did you use a
gaussmeter or a clamp around ammeter?

Emil
