I think I have read a post by Andy Cutler where he points out that it is not certain that if you take a higher dose of ALA that it will get rid of more heavy metals than taking a smaller dose like the ones Marc takes. I just know that when I would take higher doses, in the early parts of the round, my memory and my brain would function like they did when I was young. The same wasn't true when I did small rounds. My memory was pretty far gone and even after two and a half years I'm just now getting my recall abilities back to where they once were. I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing and hope that eventually my memory and brain may be better than they ever where. I've always had a bad memory and I'm hoping for a big improvement if I continue. I may have been mercury poisoned at a very early age and my brain may not be wired like a lot of folks and may be similar in some ways to that of an autistic child. It is a spectrum and I may not have been so bad that I could be called autistic but I was a lot like an autistic kid when I was very young. Always very quiet and had motor skill problems and they had to even give me"speical ed" type stuff to get me to walk straight when I was in kindergarten. When I became mercury poisoned again in my later thirties I had lots of the same kinds of problems I had when I was very young. When I first started chelating with ALA I got a lot of sensations in the back of my neck and head and I saw my balance improving. Next I saw my long term memory get better. But it was a long time before I saw improvements in the short term memory and my ability to recall stuff. If you talk to the people at the frequent dose chelation group I think the ALA is safer than other things which they say are riskier and might drive the heavy metals deeper into the brain. I think ALA is pretty safe. The thing that concerns me is that long term use might have negative effects on the mitochondria and for that reason I use mostly R-ALA. You would have to do a yahoo group search for lyme to find the name of that group. It's been a long time. You'd probably find it by using the search word lyme.

I've read that higher doses will chelate higher amounts of metal, but
it is not a linear relationship. That is, 10mg will not be 10
times stronger than 1mg. Instead, 10mg will be LESS than 10 times
stronger than 1mg.

R means right handed chirality I assume.
Someone just told me that it would make sense
to take some zinc with the ALA. If one definitely
has heavy metals that need to go, maybe this is not
good advice, but if heavy metals are not the issue,
apparently ALA can be used in certain aspects of
nerve repair but it may require zinc.

I think the original question was about R-ALA. Regular ALA
is a mix of synthetic and natural ALA. R-ALA is just
the natural ALA. In the frequent dose chelating discussion
groups, most everyone uses the regular ALA, and some even
go as far to recommend NOT using R-ALA, but the only
reason usually given is that they are not familiar with
it.

"right-handed" and "left-handed" has, I think, something
to do with the molecular structure. Natural vitamins
are generally "right-handed", while synthetic vitamins
are generally "left-handed". Some say that because
the synthetic vitamins are not exactly like the natural
versions, your body may not recognize them and instead
treat them as toxins needing to be eliminated.
