Question about cable TV wiring

spiralwindintrees
I don't have cable TV but live in an end apartment where ALL the electricaland cable TV wiring boxes are on the outside wall of my living room. Fortunately I can easily stay 5 or 6 feet away from this area. Today the cable repairmen was replacing a wire and I learned that all the apartments (seven of them on this side) are recieving cable piggybacking on one wire rather than having individual wires (all running to the same box on the outside of my living room wall). He said they will be replacing this single wire with a bundle of separate wires at some point. Is there dirty EMF coming off of the box on the other side of my living room wall and is there anything coming off the single cable running past the front of my apt under the eve, andwill this be worse or better when replaced with a bundle of individual cables?? Hoping to move from here anyway but still on a lease until August.

I think usually if there's a problem it's from a kink in the cable or
improper grounding. But improper grounding may be pretty common.
But I don't have experience with it either...

Try using a meter or AM radio (nb some radios are better than others), from
my experience the cabling will likely transfer RF into you living area if its
that close, a bundle of cables might end up with similar emissions but
depends on the route they take etc. All theory on my part.

Re: Question about cable TV wiring

Hi Paul,

I wish I could afford a meter. My FM radio reception has changed, the radiois close to the wall with the outside boxes, but I wasn't sure why (new stations interfereing or something on the outside wall?) How do I use an AM radio? I know I have read that here somewhere but don't remember. Generally I stay away from that wall, but I do sit outside to catch the sun and am close to where the cabling runs underneath the eves. Right now I feel better sitting out there if the sun is shining. I guess if they bundle a bunch of individual cables and I began feeling poorly I will know.

Get hold of a very cheap real budget AM radio, tune it out to the ned of the
scale see 1600kz on scale basically as far as the dial will go so that you
pick up white noise then bring this close to the wall and also electrics such
as lamps, light and sockets see it if the radio goes ballistic, this gives a
good indication of the amount of crap emitted from places, ignore odd
crackles but is you get a consistent or solid fax like tone from things, best keep
your distance or spend less time near to them.

A lot of sources will show up over the whole AM dial. Some only show up at
the high or low ends, some only at specific frequencies in the middle.
I use the low end of the dial most of the time, but to be thorough, scan the
whole thing.

Thank you Paul! I tried the AM radio and the wall does not buzz but my computer moniter sure does. I have a shielded CRT so it only buzzes up close and about 2 feet out the radio is just regular static. Now I can check other appliances and suspecious areas. I am guessing this method does not detectcell tower frequencys. Correct?

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the tip. I'll try this.

Right you won't get a cell tower... but the phone probably will register due
to
it's power supply etc.

With a CRT monitor you also have to check the low frequency 60 Hz field...

Hi Bill,

How does a phone show cell tower radiation?
