Projector Screen for Computer

joecitizen11
Hi everyone,

I need to change my computer set-up, as I can't look directly at computer monitors. I've always kept the contrast and brightness way down on any computer I use (CRT monitors), but with LCDs that serves as very little relief -my eyes still burn.

There's a Web-site where a guy talks about his new set-up with projector, and includes a photo, but the photo is missing:

http://www.electrosensitivity.org/mystory.htm

I've got a idea in my head for how I want things set up. The computer and electronics would be at a distance from me, with the projector beaming at a screen a little above my head height. Like going to the cinema.

Any ideas? Do you have that guy's photo? Any links?

Cheers,

Joe

Puk replies - Joe I have seen the photo, he used a projector on a shelf or
small table in front of him, You dont need the photo, get hold of a
projector that you can tolerate, preferably one that does not have a noisy fan !
Work out how you can project the PC so that the projector is as far away as
possible from you, you will need extension leads and obviously a wall or
portable screen to project to. AS far as setting the projector overhead
obviously you can get overhead mounts for certain projectors, Dont forget
that you also can get small PICO projectors, there are loads on ebay, Maplin
etc.. I have a projector, a very quiet one that I put on the fireplace
mantle peice and then sit on the sofa about 8ft away from the projector which
projects onto the large white wall infront of me, this gives a 50inch image
(can be a little overbearing, but I tend to only use it for DVD films these
days.

Thanks, Puk. Are you able to do ordinary computing tasks such as type emailetc. with your set-up? I mean, is the imagery clear enough?

Cheers,

Joe

Which projector are you using?

I just got the LG HS201 LED to try out. But it uses DLP and
it is terrible within 4 or 5 feet, even when plugged into a good
filter. I am working on putting the whole think in a serious
shielded enclosure, but it's not easy, even though I've been
pretty lucky finding parts at a surplus place.

Also, it runs on 19 V and I have not found a linear supply
with that voltage...

I've bee told it's better to try the LCD kind, though I don't
know if any have LED lamps. I've heard of swapping the
bulb with a halogen (line voltage): dimmer, but cheap and
better EMF wise.

Here's a case I made for a mitsubishi pocket
projector - pk10. It was an electromagnetic
nightmare and the case didn't help - even with
a linear power supply.

http://www.ahappyhabitat.com/100_0737.JPG

Here's why it's such a nightmare. It's a shot of
the noise going back to the DC power supply:

It's basically 30kHz pulsed at 60 Hz. The noise is
allegedly from the pulsing of the LEDs. Stay away
from DLP.

I was considering getting projector , even though My current setup is comfortable to use, the lights of the monitor still bother my eyes even with aglare filter and low brigtness , I thought maybe a projector would be easier on my eyes

Bill ,

Do you feel that the hs-201 made symptoms worse than a regular monitor?

Did you maybe feel it was less stressful on your eyes than staring at a regular monitor?

Is it grounded?

Thanks

Puk replies - the projecter I use is an OPTOMA EP761 DLP, it is very good
with a very quiet fan, offering a sharp stable image evan from a distance of
some 4m away from the projection surface giving a 50inch image.

Puk: how far do you have to move the AM radio before the
Optoma DLP stops making it buzz?

I have not really used my LG DLP yet, but it made me feel
terrible after just a couple minutes being near it.
I am still working on a shielding enclosure for it.
I have a big filter two phase filter that will be attached so that
no RF escapes between the shield and filter.
The filter is rated 100dB. The enclosure will consist
of two Hoffman RF enclosures. I have a heat sink
but probably should add some honeycomb ventilation.

To buy these parts new would cost more than the
projector. Most of them I am getting from a local surplus
place, some on eBay.

The shielding does help dramatically, at least in the AM
band. I am using the stock switchmode supply so far.
It is inside the enclosure too of course.

The only hole is just big enough for the lens to shine through.
I may add a short waveguide to that (electrically bonded with
gasket or conductive caulk) so that frequencies below the
cutoff don't get through.

Puk reply - Approx 700mm, the sound is not that hideous either.
