I use VOIP, no problems..
I think a non-voip line could carry currents as much as a VOIP one could.
It all depends on your power supply to the voip box and the internet connection which could also put noise into your VOIP box. I don't have any problem with it. What you can do is get a VOIP box and try it out while keeping your phone line. If it doesn't work for you, return the box.
I use the Grandstream HT-502 and I was using voip.ms for a while... there's definitely some tweaking involved in making it work through a router though, and some routers may not allow VOIP through properly. There are guides that help you set up all the configs in the box.
