Hi all,
I was reading on another group that new accounts on Yahoo require a cellphone, so they can text you a confirmation code. I'd say that this is yet another strike against using YahooGroups in the future for this group. However, I'm still undecided as to where we would go... is anyone here subscribed to discussion groups (or runs discussion groups) on places other than YahooGroups that they think would be suitable? I'd still like to maintain something that has a strong email capability -- typically I find web forums to be too easy to ignore... Thanks! Marc |

another group I moderate for is looking into Big Tent. I don't know a thing about it so you can check it out if you like. I know one thing, Yahoo won't be getting no cellphone number from this member! Seems like this 'free service 'could become very costly in many ways. Maybe you could set up a blog at like blogspot.com or something like that.
You would need to establish a format since that isn't actually a group site, necessarily. But to my understanding it is free. It may require more effort. Maybe it could be organized as a group instead of an individual running a group. ________________________________ From: Marc Martin <[hidden email]> To: [hidden email] Sent: Sunday, September 1, 2013 11:22 AM Subject: [eSens] New Yahoo accounts require cellphones to activate! Both gmail and yahoo urged me many times to give a mobile number, so that in case the password was forgotten, they would sms a new one. So if someone knows your e-mail-address and steals or borrows your mobile phone ( if you have one and responded to the request "in your best interest" ), then he or she can easily change your password and take over your whole e-mail-account ( if i am not mistaken here ; ) )
Probably these i-phones, blueberries and whatever already give already access to information about e-mail-addresses, which makes such an abuse even more simple. Maybe in the future the bastards will demand a microphone-chip-implant if you refuse to carry around a modern mobile device. Personally i happen not to care if people spy on me, as long as they do not hinder or damage this biological functioning entity that's called me in the process, with radiation for instance. --- In [hidden email], <adiaha22@...> wrote: Maybe you could set up a blog at like blogspot.com or something like that. Wow, the new Yahoo has just rolled into my area, and it is awful! Wow.

And this one would be next... (always hard to know if moving or staying is the better idea) Marc |
Marc, Have you checked out BigTent.com? It sure looks simpler then this mess Yahoo has created.

It wasn't clear to me that BigTent seemed to be an appropriate place for our group. But I didn't set up a test group or anything, because it seemed rather overwhelming. I tend to prefer simple. And no advertising. :-) Marc |

Sorry, I'll reply to my own post. I think BigTent needs facebook to sign in..... don't have it wont get it. Scratch that idea then. I notice Yahoo has even changed the look of my posts regarding my name and address. I wont bother with this for too long. Easier to walk away.

It's ridiculous that Yahoo! would implement changes of this nature in light of all of the negative publicity concerning NSA (and possibly other entities) spying on us. Even before the Edward Snowden leaks, I was leery about submitting my phone number to sites like Google and Yahoo!.
I do not accept being spied on - and I don't really have anything significant to hide or to be ashamed of. They say that the spying is of a very limited, minimally-invasive scope (that is - if you're not a terrorist-in-the-making) but I do not really buy that - especially since I have reason to believe that I, personally, have been violated in ways that involve snooping in on the actual content of my communications. The argument of "If you don't have anything to hide - then why worry?" - is self-serving bunk. I mean, I also don't have anything to hide when I sit at my kitchen table and eat cereal in the morning - but this doesn't mean that people have the right to install hidden cameras and watch me eat cereal every morning. ~Svetaswan --- In [hidden email], <arendgb@...> wrote: Both gmail and yahoo urged me many times to give a mobile number, so that in case the password was forgotten, they would sms a new one. This group has been archived on Nabble.com for years, so anything you've posted here is also available there. I think you could register there and delete all of your postings, if you don't want them there. Also, for many years the posts in this group appeared as Google search results. I don't think that is the case now, because we had complaints from people who didn't want these posts showing up in search results. I can't recall if they objected to them showing up in search results for their email address, or their name (or both). (Yahoo was supposed to be hiding email addresses from search engine results, but their software wasn't doing a very good job at it) Marc |
