Hi everyone,
I just wondered what people here found to be the most helpful devices for blocking EMFs from computers. I have just bought a new computer and its making me feel pretty bad, more so than my old one so I guess it must be emitting more emfs. I have CFS so am pretty sensitive to lots of things anyway but this feels quite disabling as my memory is a lot worse and I really cant think straight at all. Ive also been getting headaches which I dont normally suffer from. I thought it was the LCD monitor - my old computer had a VDU, but now I realise that its not just that. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks a lot. Anne |

I'm one of those people, too, and have simply stuck with tube monitors for now, and look forward to new technologies that will make LCD monitors obsolete... :-) One thing you can do is move everything as far away from you as possible. You may need to invest in some extension cables for your monitor, keyboard, mouse, but it's worth it. As for devices, see my previous post -- I've used all of those devices successfuly with my computer. And you download the Quantum Byte software for a free 2-week trial from: http://quantumproducts.com/catalog/quantum_byte.html If it doesn't work, well you didn't waste any money finding out! :-) Marc |

Also, on the subject of computers, some people seem to benefit more from computers that are manufactured with fewer toxic materials and have better internal EMF shielding. For example, this is an interesting company: http://www.greenmachineshop.com/ Also, I understand that Apple will be releasing new computer monitors sometime this year which will have mercury-free backlights (LED) and arsenic-free glass. What technology over LCD are you hoping for? OLEDs?

Well, I think the #1 thing is to keep a distance from the screen, so an HDTV being used as a computer monitor is the first thing (e.g, 26" diagonal, but low 768 x 1366 resolution so you can read it from a distance). Next would be LCD with the florescent backlight replaced by LED (no inverter, lower voltages, no mercury). Next would be OLED (manufacturers keep claiming that they are "coming soon", but it looks like they are still a few years off). This should be even lower voltage. There is also SED, which may never get off the ground. And there are of course other ideas being suggested that may appear in 5+ years. I suspect that SOMETHING better will come out in the next decade... Marc |

Hi Marc,
Thanks a lot for your messages and all your suggestions they have been very helpful. I downloaded the Quantum Byte software for a free trial for now to see if that helps. Thats interesting that you find LCD monitors more of a problem as it really does feel like it is the monitor that is making me feel bad though everyone I have spoken to has told me that these monitors are supposed to be safer than the CRT ones. Do you know what it is about this type of monitor that causes the problem? Do you mind me asking what specific health problems were resolved when you went back to a CRT monitor? Are there any screens that you can put over the monitor that lessens their effects? Sorry for all the questions, I will try using my old monitor again and see if that makes any difference, I guess I will know for sure then if it is that or the EMFs that are affecting me. I do have an OM slimline polariser and though I found that it did help but also made me feel worse in some ways so havent used it much since I bought it which was about 3 yrs ago but will see if that helps too. Thanks again, all the best. I have found, that many LCD as well as CRT monitors do emit signals around
30 kHz. For these signals, electrosensibles may react heavily. Some flat screen TV's (LCD) do emit less than others, even from the same branch. Hi Pete,
Thanks for your post. Do you have a problem with LCDs too? Its funny you mentioned it might give off microwaves as even though I dont have one my brain feels like it has been totally fried!! What do you mean by a 3 m screen - do you mean the monitor's screen or a screen to put over the monitor? If you mean the latter, has this helped you and where did you buy it from? Do you know what it is about > this type of monitor that causes the problem? One problem with LCDs is that the electronics are much closer to you. With a CRT, the nasty stuff is in the back of the monitor, which is much further away from you than the front of the monitor. Also, part of that electronics is a DC->AC inverter, which provides power to the florescent backlight. This is probably causing some symptoms, and I don't think a CRT has any inverter (nor a florescent light). People think LCDs are safer than CRTs because they have less magnetic field in the 60 hz range. However, an LCD is still a high voltage device (thanks to the florescent light), and has a significant electric field in the high frequency range. > Do you mind me asking > what specific health problems were resolved when you went back to a > CRT monitor? If I used a CRT monitor on a daily basis, I am less sensitive to florescent lights (which of course are everywhere). If I use an LCD monitor on a daily basis, I become more sensitive to florescent lights over a period of several days. Also, I find that I have to use more EMF protection devices with an LCD than a CRT -- specifically, the more powerful ones from Quantum Products (Quantum Pro, etc.). A Springlife Polarizer doesn't seem to provide much benefit with an LCD, however, it works quite well with a CRT. > Are there any screens that you can put over the monitor > that lessens their effects? There are those glass screens that can pick up some of the EMF and divert it to a ground wire, but I didn't get much relief from that. You can also dim the monitor to a minimum brightness level, but again that didn't help me much. The only solutions that worked for me is moving it further away, using strong items from Quantum Products, or switching back to a CRT. But I really haven't experimented nearly as much with LCDs as I have with CRTs, so I'm willing to admit that there may be a simple solution that I never tried. > I do have an OM slimline polariser and though I found that it did > help but also made me feel worse in some ways so havent used it much > since I bought it which was about 3 yrs ago but will see if that > helps too. Yes, I have made the mistake of using the Springlife Polarizers too much as well. I think excessive use of these will mobilize more toxins than your body can handle, which is essentially what the EMF is doing as well. However, limiting your use of these to particular situations (or placing them on whatever is emitting the EMF rather than on you) can be more helpful than not using them at all. But perhaps not for LCD monitors. For these, your best bet is stuff from Quantum Products, and maybe to a small degree, the RADAR card that I mentioned previously (put on the monitor, not you) Marc |

> I do have an OM slimline polariser and though I found that it did
> help but also made me feel worse in some ways Re-reading this, I'm not sure which polarizer you have. There is an "OM pendant" which is a small cylinder that is 2" long. Then there is a "Slimeline" which is a much larger "brick" that is 4" by 2" by 0.5". If you have the latter, I can see why that would be making you feel worse -- that one is way too strong for me to be used for any length of time! But if they are too strong, you can lessen their effect by only using them for limited amounts of time each day, or keeping them at a distance. For example, placing them in back of your computer monitor or on top of your computer will mean that you are only exposed to them while using the computer, and from a distance. Another thing you can do is put them in your fuse box or on the main incoming water pipe, which has only a very slight effect spread out over the house. By the way, here is a photo of the various polarizers I own... the Slimline is on the far left, and the OM has a black cord attached to it: http://ufoseries.com/polarizers.jpg Marc |

Another thing you can try with new electronics is this -- set it aside with a large polarizer sitting on top of it for a couple of days. Then try it again. I have found on a couple occasions that this helps (or that it is a coincidence?). For example, with a new digital camera and a new HD cable box that both bothered me initially, but then much less so after they had been "polarized". Unbelievable I know, but perhaps more believable if it works for anyone else... :-) Marc |

Hi Marc, Thanks again for all your messages, I really appreciate all the info and suggestions. > One problem with LCDs is that the electronics are much closer to you. > With a CRT, the nasty stuff is in the back of the monitor, which is > much further away from you than the front of the monitor. It does make sense about the distance between us and the computer. I have moved it to the back of my desk so will see if that helps at all....at least thats one good thing about having a slimline monitor. I didnt have a clue that some LCDs contain fluorescent lighting - I am quite sensitive to fluorescent lighting and generally try to avoid it. I think its because I have mercury toxicity and I know that they contain mercury. I did check with the company though and they assure me that the lighting is very likely to be LED not fluorescent. Assuming it is LED would that still be considered a high voltage? I am wondering if that or the EMFs have had some effect on the mercury in my body/brain as I have been feeling truly awful mentally and assuming that some sort of crossreaction is going on. > If I used a CRT monitor on a daily basis, I am less sensitive to > florescent lights (which of course are everywhere). Hi again Marc,
You were totally right about these monitors using fluorescent lamps for the lighting! I phoned the company again this morning and spoke to someone else who knew more about it and told me they use a cold cathode fluorescent lamp. As you rightly said they dont use LEDs because they are more expensive. So I guess that is what has been causing the problem for me and its a relief to know why. It doesnt seem to flicker though but I am sensitive to normal light sometimes anyway and it just seems far too bright for me. Thanks for letting me know about that, I dont think I would have guessed otherwise. I think I might still try an anti-glare screen to see if that makes any difference and if not then look into the Quantum Products or just go back to my old CRT! It makes sense what you say about not being able to handle the toxins stirred up, thats exactly what it felt like and I do still have a long way to go in terms of my mercury detox and strengthening my detox system. Thanks once again, you've been a great help. Take care, Anne --- In [hidden email], Marc Martin <marc@...> wrote: > > > I did check with the company though and they assure me that > > the lighting is very likely to be LED not fluorescent. > > Really?
