Journey of Discovery

ladymarmalade696
Hello everyone, I just joined the site and I'm trying to read as much
as quickly as I can. Forgive me if I'm asking a question that has
been addressed and I haven't read it yet. How did each of you learn
that the cause of your problems is ES? I ask because I've been to
numerous physicians and had many diagnostic tests done to so far be
told that I have Chronic Fatigue and Epstein Barr. I'm very thankful
that 99% of the tests have been negative but a friend of mine that is
also an RN mentioned ES to me. Together we've done research and I'm
becoming convinced that this is my true problem. I work in a wireless
internet building, spend 8-12 hours daily on my office computer or
home laptop, have my PDA and cell phone with me 24/7 (I purchased my
own business one year ago and my business depends on this technology.)
Oh, my home is also set up with WiFi. I would appreciate any input
any of you might offer.

This actually took me several months to deduce... I was blaming
the building at my workplace (having inspectors coming in to
check for mold, lack of oxygen, etc.), but eventually when I
found that I no longer could work in my building, I tried
working at home using a laptop and discovered that I was
having the same problems at home in front of the laptop! Then it was
a matter of determining if I was reacting to off-gassing
of the plastics (fire retardants?) or the electricity.
It became obvious that it was the electricity when I started
having problems with the TV, the telephone, light bulbs,
etc.

But there was no medical diagnostic test for this. This is
more of a self-diagnosed problem. Further confirmed by
getting better/worse by changing my electrical environment.

If I were you, I'd start looking at wired alternatives
to anything wireless in your house. Also, replace as many
florescent (including energy efficient bulbs) lights with
regular incandescent lights. Also move things further
away from you (do you really need a cellphone and PDA
next to you 24/7?)

Also, start paying attention to where you feel the most
drained -- that is, what is it that you are doing
when you feel your worst? Using your laptop? On
the phone? Etc. Those are the areas which need
the most attention. You may need to buy a different
type of device, or keep it further away from you,
or adjust it's settings, or try one of a variety
of EMF protection devices and see if that helps.

Also, be aware that ES can often be a sign of a faulty
immune system, heavy metal poisoning, etc., and taking
steps to correct that will help you become more
normal again in your reaction to things.

For very many sufferers from severe ES, the ES begins when their health has
been seriously weakened by an illness like chronic fatigue which damages the
immune system. So CFS, Epstein Barr or a number of related illnesses (often
difficult to detect and diagnose) could be your original problem, but ES
could be a current manifestation. Do you have multiple chemical
sensitivities (MCS) as well? This is often a good indicator. If you are
able to work in a WiFi environment and on computers for several hours a day
your ES is fortunately quite moderate at present - for severely affected
people a few minutes' exposure is unbearable. However, all significant
sources can increase the "load" on susceptible people. Have you tried
spending a few hours in the forest or by a secluded lake and seeing whether
your symptoms diminish significantly? (These are low emf environments
because of the absorptive capacity of water).

As Marc says, if you are showing any susceptibility at all, go for hardwired
alternatives raher than wireless. This includes avoiding cordless phones
and WiFi, which give off significant permanent fields which can easily be
detected with a simple meter. Mobile phones are less clear - newer versions
seem to emit less, especially when dormant, but give a huge pulse when
receiving an incoming call and a high level during an actual call.

Best wishes, Ian

Thank you Ian and Marc for your responses -
Although we (my doctors, a close friend and myself) have been trying
to figure out what's going on with me for over a year I am in the
beginning stages of investigating and learning about ES. I have
also had inspectors looking for mold, etc. When I say that I work
so many hours each day in a wireless situation - I should say that
on a great day I do that - there have been aprox 50 days this year
alone that I've had to miss part if not all of the day at work only
to feel just as horrible at home (wireless too). The only reason
that number is limited to aprox 50 is because I can control my work
output while in the office. If I was still working for my former
employer I wouldn't have a job because it's getting worse.

One of the first things I will definitely do is follow your
suggestions to go to wired alternatives, substitute lightbulbs,
eliminate the PDA and try to limit my physical contact with the cell
as much as possible.

As far as multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS) - that's also new to
me but I can say I have been terribly intolerant of perfumes,
cleaning products, many cosmetic items, fuels, fumes, etc since I
was a little girl. Headaches, nausea, dizziness, irritability,
mental confusion.

I also just purchased some items that are designed to neutralize
emissions in my environment (of course I won't mention brand names) -
I may be wasting my money but at this point I'd try almost anything
to feel some sort of energy.

Again, thank you for your suggestions and if you know of any other
sites I might check into please feel free to let me know. I need
all the help I can get. One day I'll pay it forward.

Sharon

Please *do* mention brand names and also product names! We like
to keep track of what works and what doesn't work, and may be able
to offer you tips on the best ways to make use of things (which
isn't always what the directions say to do)

Sharon - you might like to try swapping your metal sprung mattress for a
foam one. I did this and found no real difference although I can see the logic
re the metal springs acting like re-radiating antennae beneath your body.
Another tip which is the best for me and that is to turn of as much of your
electricity at the fuse board as possible in your home. The lighting circuit in
my home which I find the most offensive has been off for 5 yrs, we just use
occassional lamps (wodden ones that are earthed).

Regards

Paul

I believe that I knocked out my full blown EBV with colloidal silver.
Get a micro particle generator or buy enough for 3 or 4 weeks and I
think you will feel better very soon.

Re: Journey of Discovery - MCS

Ian Kemp
In reply to this post by ladymarmalade696
Hi Sharon,

It sounds to me as if you have a classic case of MCS - basically reacting to
very low concentrations of hydrocarbon-based compounds. Causes are unclear,
but a common finding is that the liver is unable to process these compounds
and eliminate them correctly from the body (detoxification pathways). The
body's immune system then becomes run down and vulnerable to other things,
including in many cases EMF. If your doctors are sympathetic, that's an
excellent start, as they might be prepared to support you in doing tests to
identify what might be missing. (Unfortunately, mainstream medicine has
generally been slow to accept MCS, as with ME/CFS). But standard tests are
too vague - it needs specific analysis for a variety of substances.
Unfortunately these tests are normally only done by a few specialised labs
privately, so can be quite expensive. My wife Sue had MCS and then
developed ES (very severe), the tests showed that her sulphate and
glutathione levels were very low and as a result of intravenous infusions of
these, her MCS and ES are much improved. As Marc mentions, heavy metals are
another possibility, although sometimes it's hard to tell which is chicken
and which is egg - sufferers react to trace quantities of mercury etc, but
why are they different to the rest of the population? what's the underlying
cause?

Best wishes, Ian
