Hoovering

gprince01
I'm very ES. I have had my house rewired in screened cable which
really helps. But I'd like to be able to do the hoovering.

I've made extension leads out of screened cable and also rewired table
lamps with it.

However, i am a bit worrieed about rewiring a hoover. One would also
need to surround the motor in some form of earthed shielding.

Can any one help?

What i need is a nice sympathetic electrician.

I've been thinking one should use a canister style vacuum (interesting that
many cleaning ladies seem to insist on them). Then get an extra long hose?

Older ones may have steel bodies which might help. Getting the contacts
cleaned (and brushes tightened?) might help. Plugging into a filter might
help too (I usually recommend IceRadioproducts model 475 in the US)
by keeping noise off the house wires. With your shielded wires, it may
be less of an issue.

Can you say more about the kind of wiring you used in your house?

It's probably not that hard to put a new cord on the vacuum. Adding
shielding
is a little harder and you might create the danger of arcing or a short.
If you have Wye power in your area, the house ground is almost certainly
contaminated with noise, and grounding the vac to that may not be an
advantage.

If you want to get it re-wired with sheilded cable this should not be a
problem for a hoover repair man, it will just cost you. Alternatively if you are
brave and take your hoove apart you will probably find that there is a small
junction box on the end of the wire so its not rocket science.

If you are re-wring, consider using MuCord
http://www.lessemf.com/es.html#223

It is both shielded for electric fields emissions, AND configured to
dramatically reduce magnetic field emissions.

To Bill Bruno, Paul and Less EMF

Thanks for your posts in hoovers, I live in Southern England - don't
know what Wye Power is or whether I have it around here.

The hoover is currently wired with 2core cable - i.e. there is no
earth connection on the hoover. So it's not clear where one would
attach the earth wore of 3core shielded cable to.

I've rewired lamps using brass lamp holders which have an earth pin.

Other appliances with no obvious earth connection are trickier.

Less EMF - thanks for the MU cord info.
1) What is the precise diameter of the MU cord?
2) Can you supply instructions on how to wire apparently 5core Mu
cord to a 3 pin Uu plug?

Many Thanks

MuCord has a diameter of 1/4 inch (6 mm)

Of the 5 wires, at each end you twist together the 2 white wires, then twist
together the 2 black wires. That gives you "1" white, "1" black, plus the
remaining ground wire.

I have attached detailed instructions with pctures to your e-mail address,
and would be happy to send the same to anyone else who might be interested.
