Healthy Bed

James

I have painful, achy, tingling arms, most likely from my corded optical mouse and corded keyboard.  The pain seems to intensify when I go to bed.  I have a metal bed and a standard mattress and box spring, presumably with metal coils.  Do you think the bed is making my symptoms worse?  What is the preferred type of bed for an ES person?

I attached a copper wire from the metal bed frame to a metal radiator.  This seemed to help a little.  Would this be entirely a placebo effect?

Thanks,

James

Furniture with metal in them (mattresses, couches, chairs) are known to cause problems with ES.  The best solution is to replace them with something that uses no metal.  A cheaper solution would involve grounding the metal, but that's less ideal.

There are lots of non-metal mattresses -- foam, latex, air, TempurPedic.  However, there are non-ES considerations such a back support (causing back pain), body temperature dispersion (causing you to get too hot), and chemical offgassing (for the chemically sensitive).  I had to go through quite a few mattresses to find the best compromise for myself.

Hi Marc,

What kind of bed did you end up with?

Thanks,

James

Ironically, after trying some very expensive organic mattresses that I later rejected, I ended up with something that was relatively cheap, and can be bought on Amazon.com.  No metal, no problems with back support, overheating, or offgassing.

  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I3RFYLW  (Brentwood Memory Foam Mattress)

I've had this for a year, and so far it hasn't collapsed to the point where I'd need to buy a replacement (which DID happen for one of the other mattresses I tried previously)

James,

We have now 2 latex mattresses. One for us &  our teen.   This co. sells them for 1/2 the price of most organic latex co's.

They are very nice to work with.    The only issue I have with latex is make sure the cover is not tight fitting. Latex needs to
breath to be comfortable.    Latex does sleep a little warm in summer though.

This co. had no smells at all to it.

Is it made from polyurethane foam? That will cause problems for some with chemical sensitivities.

It's "CertiPure" foam... I've had problems with other foam mattresses, but not this one.  Other reviewers say the same thing.

Also, James, you mentioned that you were using a corded optical mouse?

There have been a lot of people who say that a corded mechanical mouse (the old "ball" mice from the 1990s) are better for people with ES.  I've never found an optical mouse that was a benign as the Microsoft Intellimouse mice that I get on eBay.

I don't know... it looks like it's more of a certification rather than a specific material:

Marc, what do you place the mattress on? Did you buy a foundation for it and if so, which one?
Thanks

No, we sleep low to the ground so the dog can get onto the bed.  :-)

So wood slats, sold wood, etc. in a wood bed frame is what we use.  We tried a tatami mat as a base, but it smells a bit too much like "grass" to me (but is more breathable than wood, although it's not clear to me that this mattress needs a breathable base)

I can't remember offhand what frame we got, but it did takes months to offgas, as it was purchased from a regular store.
