Hey all,
I just found out I have astigmatism(sp?) is both eyes and need progressive lens. The Dr. said I could either get reading/computer screen in one lens or reading/computer/driving in one lens. I have never worn glasses before so I think getting all 3 in one lens would be really hard to get used to, plus I don't feel like I have an issue when driving. I was shocked at the price-all told it will cost around $500 for the frame and lens with my insurance, not sure if Costco would be any cheaper. I came here mainly to ask about metal in the frames. The lighter pair had plastic on the front part but the arms are metal. Would this be an issue? They had one that was this soft, flexible frame that was really light but it was $400 just for the frame! Any suggestions or ideas? I'm stumped |

Some of those soft, flex frames are made of titanium. I have heard of a Swiss flex frame which is not metal, but it is expensive. I was given a $500 eyeglass with-insurance quote, also, from an optometrist. Costco charged $250 total (without insurance).
Even plastic frames have a metal wire running through the arms. The most sensitive ES person From: steve [via ES] <ml-node+[hidden email]>

Thank you, it seems Costco has very good prices although they use their own anti glare treatment, etc.

Really? I am bothered not only by metal framed glasses, but also plastic framed glasses with the metal wire inside, and also plastic framed glasses WITHOUT a wire but with the metal hinges and screws! However, for the latter this only really bothers me when I'm sitting in front of a computer (high EMF). As a result, my vision correction is completely metal free (except for my sunglasses, which I don't use in front of a computer). I wear contact lenses and my reading glasses have no metal at all (including no metal hinges) Marc |

I guess it goes to show that we (ES) each have different levels of sensitivity to different things. When first debilitated by EMF, I shunned wearing all jewelry and metal framed glasses in an effort to banish any potential aggravators but now slowly have been re-introducing some things and closely observing reactions. It seems that I do fine now with my rimless glasses with the metal arms enclosed in plastic and can wear rings and a necklace, but I do like wearing that one contact lens mono-vision thing.
An ES friend is fine with briefly using and leaving on an older flip-open cell phone when in the car while I become ill with such usage. From: Marc Martin [via ES] <ml-node+[hidden email]>

Ah, that sucks. The all Metal Free frames are so expensive. My optometrist wants $470 just for the frame.
I'm going to have to go to Costco and see what they offer, in the meantime I need the prescription from my doctor so I can shop around. Still leery of the progressive lens because I don't know if it will bother me. It's mainly the computer work that bothers me, for reading I can always use a cheap pair of reading glasses although they are a little too strong. Wondering if getting it just for the computer will still help with reading or will it be too strong for that? Ugh, not enjoying this |

My understanding is that your optometrist was supposed to hand you a copy of your new prescription when you paid for the exam. I have progressive lenses for far away and reading, although I really use the 'reading' part for the computer screen because I read printed materials best without glasses - very near-sighted here.
The only time the progressives mess me up is when golfing, so for that I wear the one contact lens which works great. From: steve [via ES] <ml-node+[hidden email]>

I think she figured I was going to buy a pair right there because she sat me down with the eyeglass guy. I'm going to get a few prescriptions if she lets me. One for a Progressive reading/computer lens, one for driving (which I probably won't fill) and one for computer only (the computer bothers me more than anything and cheap cheaters work fine for reading. If I can't handle the progressive lens I will just get the computer lens.

Yes, I think a lot of optometrists want to encourage you to buy your frames and lenses from them, so they don't give you a prescription to buy them elsewhere unless you ask for it.

They'll have a conniption if I tell them I'm going to Costco. Interesting thing is that they sent me their newsletter and it had a few links to websites that sell glasses. One is called Gunnar and they sell Computer Glasses. I wonder if that would be good enough to ease my eye strain without having to get a prescription?

Actually in the market for a new pair of frames due to the fact that mine have metal in them. Glasses are expensive, they were $750 without insurance for my last pair. I feel that the metal near my head affects me because its conductive. Can't even wear metal jewelry anymore. I had to get the metal bar out of my mouth (retainer) because it was conducting emf. Might want to make sure you are not going to have any problems before you buy them. If theres any way to get around it I would go with contacts to be safe, don't they have contacts for astigmatisms?
You could have someone muscle test you with the glasses to see if they are okay for you.. or you can muscle test yourself very easily. You just stand up straight, close your eyes concentrate on whatever it is that you want to know if its bad or good for you, and if your body leans forward its okay and if you start leaning back then its bad. Don't do it while holding something heavy or wearing a backpack though as it will skew your results. Takes awhile to master because its easy to overthink it, but if you don't overthink it, its pretty accurate and simple. |

I've begun wearing just one 1-day Acuvue Moist contact lens in my dominant eye. The other eye had astigmatism and used to have a contact. Both eyes are dry, but with the daily wear lens in one eye I can wear it comfortably all day long. You won't see anything
sharply with the mono-vision, but at least there's no need to hunt down a pair of reading glasses! From: SuperLaura [via ES] <ml-node+[hidden email]>

I can't do contacts because I'm squeamish about my eyes. I decided to try computer glasses to see if they help enough. Trying out a pair of Gunnar's now. If they don't work I think I'll just go to Costco because of their lenient return policy Steve
