Hey guys,
Hoping someone can provide a quick response here. I had previously sent a message about RF noise coming from what I suspect is our Roger's High Speed Internet and Digital Television cable - it was getting into the whole house, even on wiring that went to the fridge, stove, etc. Funny, we just got a call today from Bell, offering three free months of high speed internet over the phone line (DSL). from what I understood from one of the answers to my last email (it was Bill Bruno who replied) it sounds like DSL is preferable to cable (that's whathe uses). Bell will phone back later today with this promo offer; I'm tempted to take it and get rid of the Roger's cable completely, by disconnecting it from the house. In everyone's opinion, would it be worth it? Will DSL over the phone line be less likely to pollute the house with RF than cable internet/television, especially if we do what I understood Bill to say, which is use shielded CAT-5 cable for the phone lines? Just wanted to get a few more opinions if possible, before committing to Bell instead. It seems like it would be a better choice to me, but wouldn't mind hearing any more thoughts. Thanks! R. Hi Marc,
Thanks for the reply. Have you tried any further steps with DSL, suchas using it on a phone line independent of the one you use to place land-line calls, or replacing your normal phone cable inside of your house with CAT-5 cable like Bill suggested? No, I haven't done any of that. Please note that DSL is only really bad
when it is "active" and being used. Turn off the router (or your computers), and the DSL will shut itself off (as evidenced by the lack of noise on unfiltered phone outlets throughout the house. But putting the DSL on its own separate phone line sounds like a good idea. Marc On Sat, 10 Jul 2010 10:34:55 -0700 (PDT), "R. Ticle" <[hidden email]> said: > Hi Marc, > > Thanks for the reply. Another thing that might even help with your existing cable
is to run it through solid metal conduit, which is grounded in one spot. But beware the RF at either end of the conduit will be bad. Ideally it would have a metal box at the end with filtered connections, but I can't advise you on the details. Richard Conrad probably knows how to do it. Bill On Sat, Jul 10, 2010 at 11:34 AM, R. Hi Marc,
Thanks, it's good to know it can be turned off; we used to do that with ourrouter/modem anyway, but I guess with cable it wasn't making any difference apart from the switching power supplies of the modem and router being inactive. I have seen pre-made filters for phone lines in the AM spectrum; all my inquiries so far about filters for cable have yielded non positive results from companies. Another phone line's, what, another forty bucks a month?Maybe cheaper to start with shielded CAT-5 cable to replace the current line. Thanks again, R. --- On Sat, 7/10/10, Marc Martin <[hidden email]> wrote: From: Marc Martin <[hidden email]> Subject: Re: [eSens] DSL vs. High Speed Cable Internet To: [hidden email] Received: Saturday, July 10, 2010, 5:43 PM No, I haven't done any of that. Hi Bill,
Thanks for that thought. I was looking at the cable with my dad and said, "so, whaddaya think the likelihood of wrapping all this cable in foil or something metal and grounding it is?" He said it's not likely; our wiring is a mess, anyway, cables going all over the place, near steel beams and pipes, near electrical wires, a big friggin' jumble, really. If we do end up keeping the cable service, I'll ask him again, but perhaps we'll try the DSL, which you use and I guess prefer, and use CAT-5 to replace our normal phone wiring. Might be a good chance to rout the phone cable properly in a non -haphazard manner! I'm not sure if I was clear on your last response to my previous message; are you in fact using a phone line independent of your land-line for your DSL connection (ie, one phone line to make calls on, another for the DSL itself)? Do you think we can get away with one line for both phone and DSL to start with? What about the filter on your DSL line that you mentioned (type, location, etc.)? Thanks so much, R. --- On Sat, 7/10/10, Bill Bruno <[hidden email]> wrote: From: Bill Bruno <[hidden email]> Subject: Re: [eSens] DSL vs. High Speed Cable Internet To: [hidden email] Received: Saturday, July 10, 2010, 5:44 PM Another thing that might even help with your existing cable is to run it through solid metal conduit, which is grounded in one spot.
