Clothes Washers & Dryers?

Hi all,

My wife tells me that we need to replace our 20-year old clothes washer and dryer. What we've got now is quite old-fashioned (mechanical knobs and buttons), and doesn't cause me any ES problems at all. However, I imagine the current models have digital displays, computer chips, etc. Anyone got any recommendations (or warnings) from an ES standpoint for someone who is about to go clothes washer / dryer shopping?

(or maybe an off-list recommendation of a particular model that seems well-built and won't be needing lots of service calls in the future?)

I just bought the old fashioned less expensive manual type (no computer or digital controls) Kenmore & it is just fine!  Loni

Sorry I can't offer particular advice, Marc; just that I likely second yournotion that newer machines look highly computerized and if it's possible Imight steer clear of them, too.  For what it's worth, I've noticed that our not-quite-new-but-not-decades-old-either washing machine (no digitalreadouts on it, but it's a front loader high efficiency model) makes some big noises on the AM radio when it's spinning; maybe 'cause the motor is variable speed, or something?

Anyhow, I'd say try to find an older model in good condition, if it's possible - and okay with your wife. ;)

commercial clothes washer & dryer, and I can confirm that these
are just fine. No digital displays -- just knobs!

Funny you should say that... we ended up buying a Speed Queen
commercial clothes washer & dryer, and I can confirm that these
are just fine. No digital displays -- just knobs!

I am looking for a washer for my parents' house and I remembered you mentioning liking the Speed Queen Brand.  (I had formerly bought a Whirlpool for myself which works well for ES, but I don't like that it doesn't have a lint filter.)  I looked up your post but you do not mention which model number you bought.  Would you mind sharing?  Also, do you and your wife like the way it washes, etc?

A lint filter for a clothes washer?  I don't think I've ever heard of
that (for the dryer yes, but not the washer).

Anyway, we bought the "commercial quality" Speed Queen top-load washer,
along with the dryer that goes along with it.  There are a few slightly
different models with slightly different bells & whistles.  Here's
what they look like (boring):

But perfectly fine from an ES standpoint, and nobody here has had
any complaints about the way they work.

Yes, housewives know there is a lint filter in most washers (or at least USED to be!), however, family members never go there.  lol  It used to be found inside the agitator column.  I never thought to question it would be missing!  But there is no info whatsoever in my Whirlpool manual to where it now is (or isn't).  I have noticed over time that the clothes come out lintier from the washer.  And this is particularly a problem since I often air dry on a clothesline indoors or out.

A lint filter for a clothes washer? I don't think I've ever heard of
