Bought a house: need advice

chanamichaelah
Hi,
i just bought a 2 story house with a walkout basement.  i would like to shield it, but after reading about it online in general and in this forum specifically i have no idea what to do.  i was thinking of doing y-shield on the upstairs ceiling and interior walls that face outside.  In my bedroom i was planning to do a faraday cage type of thing and tun off the breaker to the room.  We are not sensitive (as far as i  know), just concerned for our health. Any ideas on a good way to reduce our exposure to the various problematic waves?  We have/use no wifi, bluetooth, cell phones or dect devices in the house though we do have a tv that may be a wifi device?  Not sure how that works.  i turned it off on our computers.
Thanks so much!
Chana

Chana,

That's great you are being proactive on this!

First thing I would do is buy a meter you will know definitively that there is nothing being transmitted in your house. A fairly inexpensive meter is the Cornet ED-65 which you can purchase from Lessemf.com for $130.  Be sure you get the one with the specified range of 100 MHz to 6 GHz range so that it will pick up the newer cordless phones.

Second,  I'd be careful about installing any reflective material in your house. Without really knowing what your are doing you could increase your exposure by bouncing your neighbor's wifi, signals from cell towers, and smart meter radiation around your house.  I would stick to absorber material for the walls and ceiling and maybe the Swiss-shield for the windows.

Third,  get rid of your Smart-phones or at least limit your use of them. Get a headset which is shielded or with an air-tube.  Both Lessemf and Mercola.com sell this item. If you have to have a Smart-phone, change the setting so that it does not automatically refresh the data but only refreshes on demand.

The list is endless as to what you can do, but you are doing the right thing by looking for information.  I'm sure others will add to this.

I would probably not use y-shield if there's no actual problem as
there have been people who thought it made things worse (possibly
some kind of resonance?) and it's hard to un-do it.
If there's a tower in plain sight I would be inclined to do something to
block it.
Depends on what the house is made of etc.

I would start with removing dimmer switches, fluorescent bulbs, low voltage
lighting and other offenders.

Hi, Chana,

We have a walk-out basement too, but the exposed area of the basement is not the entire length of the house.  We plan to someday build a deck over this part, accessible from the kitchen, but create a screened porch-like room under the deck, right off of a garden--just a patio off the basement exists back there now.  This would give us the chance to encase the under part of the deck--the entire room-- in steel mesh screen (which blocks cell towers, etc relatively well).  In the meantime, we plan to plant trees and shrubs--esp large, fast growing evergreens around the back of the house and garden.  [I say, "we plan" a lot, because our lives are on hold right now with other matters which have occupied our time in the past 18 months.  ;)  The plan was actually to have this all done by now!  lol]  Trees block cell emfs really well, imo--I can feel a large difference behind large trees.  When we plant trees, we plant small trees--2 to 5 feet high.
Arborvitae, white pine, and hemlock all grow about 3 feet/ year for us.  Southern magnolias (leaves year-round) are another good choice and grow about 4 feet/ year for us.  I prefer doing things which increase the value of the house substantially, rather than just add "fortifications".  The fortification is sometimes necessary, but you will see little for your time and money on resale, if it comes to that (and we who have ES and MCS realize it often does come to that).

Welcome to the group, Chana; I hope you learn much here,
Diane

Re: Bought a house: need advice

PS, on planting trees.... if any should try this, we plant the trees one half to one third closer than the closest recommended width (depending on the ultimate spacing of the tree--arborvitae start out closer together to begin with--you can only plant half spaced for them).  Then we thin the trees out as they get too close--often we have replanted these thinned out trees elsewhere in the yard (to about 7 to 9 feet high, any higher and they require a professional to plant them).  You can often sell these, as well, to others looking for cheaper trees--or give them away for free to someone willing to dig them up.  Doing it this way allows for trees which might die for some reason in an important spot (who wants a hedgerow with all 10 foot trees and one 2 footer?), and also provides better shielding earlier on.

Re: Bought a house: need advice

chanamichaelah

Thanks for the warm welcome and the advice-
Love the idea of planting trees to help shield the house.  i am planning to do edible landscaping anyway, so i will incorporate quick growing edibles to form a perimeter around us with an emphasis on evergreen varieties.  What would absorber material for the walls be?
Anyone like canopies around the bed with blocking material or could that also cause problems as Y-shield may?
(sorry if this is a duplicate post:  i accidentally posted when someone else was signed in and not sure if it took)
