Airport radar: how worried should one be about it?

Hi everyone,

I live in the Los Angeles area, and I have been searching nearby for low EMF rural places to move to. One area looks particularly promising; however, there is a relatively small airport that is approximately 7-13 miles away from the community. The airport (Twentynine Palms Airport) is a public use airport owned by the county that averages 49 flights per day (97% general aviation and 3% military). I have seen a radar tower on the airport; so I would like to be able to measure the radar emitted by the airport radar antenna(s) and by the planes themselves. However, I am having trouble finding a sensitive meter capable of accurately measuring the full range of airport radar frequencies. Does anyone know of any meters for this purpose? I have a TES 593 meter, but it does not seem ideal for this purpose.

Moreover, I was wondering: how concerned should one be about airport/airplane EMFs relative to other artificial sources of EMFs, e.g., cell-phone towers or AM/FM radio?

Thank you in advance for any responses.

maybe put the question about radar in the subject heading...  :-)

This doesn't really answer your original question but I felt duty bound to point out that rural locations are (surprisingly enough) not always better than more urban ones.

Yes, it helps to have more space between you and your neighbor, but I have found that the cell phone towers in rural areas give off a MUCH more powerful signal than the ones here in the suburbs, presumably because they are fewer and further between.  Even my husband could feel the effects of one of those monsters, and he's not electrosensitive!  It was that strong!

Driving by one or more of these behemoths on a regular basis would be difficult for me...

...but of course, your mileage may vary, depending on the specific sensitivities you experience.

Best of luck!

I think it depends highly on what YOU are sensitive to. I don't have much problems with radio waves so much.  I don't know why but there are very specific things that my body is more sensitive to than others and every person is different. Obviously increasing your distance from cell towers is going to help, the airport does seem very far away from what you are saying... maybe try a short lease in the area before a longer lease or buying a place?

Re: Airport radar: how worried should one be about it?

Fog Top

I searched for a new home away from RF transmitters several years ago.  A home I looked at was 5+ miles east of an airport and their radar pulses could be detected with an EMF meter. Another home looked at was 4 miles north of the airport and no radar pulses were detected.  I've seen the same curious thing with cell towers, so it's really important to have good EMF meters to check out the environment of potential living spaces.
