tolerable vacuum?

Has anyone had luck finding a style or brand of vacuum that doesn't
agitate ES symptoms as much as the next? I am shopping for a new
vacuum now and really only need it for cleaning the edges of hardwood
floors around the baseboards of rooms. Any more than 5 minutes or so
near a device like that gives me a headache and the flu symptoms the
next day-every time. I can't use hair dryers or use the electric razor
to cut hubby's hair anymore for fear of getting deathly ill. But, I
have LOTS of animals and have to vacuum cause just manual sweeping
doesn't pick up all the pet hair and dander. I was thinking a canister
type may be better so I can be a few feet away from the motor at all
times. Does that seem like it may help? I have a meter but
unfortunately I don't know of any places in lower Michigan where
they'll let me turn on lots of different models in store and check emf
levels. I was thinking a Dyson DC21 canister vacuum because it has a
HEPA filter and is bagless. It's around $500 but I guess that's
typical price for canister vacs. Any suggestions? Thanks everybody!

Deidra -- I use a Miele cannister vacuum and it seems fine,
but to tell you the truth, I don't seem to have as much
trouble with motors (hair dryers, etc.) as with other
things.

If you can afford a housecleaner, or if there is someone
else who can do the vacuuming, that would also work...

Whatever you do, don't get a Dyson!!! While I think it vacuums very well and
has great suction, they are extremely loud, and exacerbate my symptoms like
pain, headaches, impatience, etc... very much!

The advice I got (from consulting with conradbiologic.com) was to get a
shop-vac or other simple 1-speed canister so you can
get a very long hose (shop vac sells adapters ($5!) to connect hoses
together). Keep
the switch on and plug in the cord to turn it on. Get a hepa bag or better
yet put a
hose on the output side and run that out the window. Or put the whole vac
outside.
Otherwise, also recommend ear protectors for the sound.

Central vac system? They're not cheap, perhaps overkill for your

Might be overkill if she's only needing to clean the baseboards
around her hardwood floors. For that, a cannister with a hose and a
small attachment should work, or if you really want to avoid EMF, just
use water and a rag. :-)

magnetic fields from the motors on a couple of "plug-in" push-vacs before.

In my current house, I have no problem with running the vacuum--perhaps because it is a really old one.  In my other house I someday hope totolerate and move to, I have thought of using a shop vac with a hugelong hose and parking it outside on porches while vacuuming.  I have heard this will work, tho I have not had to use it yet.  (I'd run the hose thru a slightly opened window.)  Up till now, I have been able to get by using a "Swiffer" dust mop with rewashable microfiber cloths in place of thepricey throw-away ones that you are supposed to use; this works great!  (I have all hardwood floors in my other house.)  I have also heard that Miele makes a great small sweeper that is good and lightweight.  I plan also to check this out.
