I suppose it depends on the router, but some of them need more ventilation than others, and some get hotter than others.  Also if you can have a "buffer" of airspace between the router and the shielding material, that would help the router to ventilate.

Also with some routers, you can turn the wireless power levels down by going into the settings, which would be an option if your router supports that.
