I won't go near a regular store bought mattress. My mother just got an adjustable bed and it really stank so I bought a mattress encasing for her.

My concern is whether I react to the smell of natural latex.

I was considering an organic futon with a wool mattress pad but still don't know what to do

My pillow is down with an organic cotton cover

I bought a mattress that was awful.. as far as the chemicals. Didn't really think about it until after I bought it :/ No metal in it but i should have bought a natural latex one. What worked for me was buying some plastic and cloth mattress covers that zip up. I put one of each (plastic first and then a cloth one) around the mattress and it seems to keep the chemicals from leaching out into the air. Also you may want to line your pillow as well, some pillows are pretty toxic.
