I would move that smoke alarm further away and high up on a ceiling.

What law are you citing for mandatory smoke alarms?

Mine are battery operated, but I do have a gas heater and oven so not sure it would be wise to remove it. My meter is about 3 feet away from my bed, but outside the room (in living room)

he says it affects at some distance--like 30 feet.  Do you have wired ones?  or can you just pull out the batteries?  I have 3 but two have batteries and I have disabled them...

just because we are ehs does not mean we react any more than others to ionizing radiation tho...  nobody knows I think.
