What is/are the best adrenal support supplements to take? I am still
trying to get this one right after how many years? I have tried about
everything and still exhausted. Advice appreciated.

Hi Cheryl,

One adrenal supporting therapy to consider is a good licorice extract.  Not just any licorice products will work, though.  First, it must not be 'de-glycerized'!!!  It is the glycerrhizinate / glycerrhetinic acid that is the active therapeutic ingredient.  What the glycerrhizinate does is slow down one of the enzymes that breaks down cortisol, our main adrenal cortex hormone.  IOW, cortisol degradation is slowed, thereby boosting the amount of cortisol available for adapting to stresses of all kinds.

I believe it was an Italian doctor by the name of Baschetti who popularized this treatment.  I suggest doing a little search on Baschetti for a look at licorice and adrenal fatigue.

Two types of licorice root supplements are sold, and it’s crucial to
understand the difference between them. One type is essentially a whole
licorice root extract that contains glycyrrhetinic (pronounced
gli-sir-eh-tin’-ic) acid, which is helpful in resolving adrenal
exhaustion, but may cause hypertension if overused. The other type is
deglycyrrhinated—commonly known as DGL licorice—in which the
glycyrrhetinic acid has been removed.
Medicinally, glycyrrhetinic acid blocks the body’s breakdown of
cortisol, which has potential health benefits and risks. Glycyrrhetinic
acid can boost adrenal gland function, which enhances our stress
resistance. However, consuming too much glycyrrhetinic acid can mimic
the body’s over-production of the hormone aldesterone, leading to high
blood pressure, sodium and water retention, and potassium depletion.
Whether you take DGL licorice or whole extract, and how much, depends on
 your condition and desired outcome.
Chronic stress increases levels of the stress-buffering hormone
cortisol. Adrenal exhaustion develops when the body can no longer
sustain high cortisol production. Fatigue typically follows, and many
people become dependent on caffeine. Licorice root (containing
glycyrrhetinic acid) blocks the body’s breakdown of cortisol, enabling a restoration of normal levels of the hormone...[snip]

Other potentially helpful treatments for adrenal fatigue (off the top of my head):

Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus) can also be helpful for improving endocrine function.

Chromium Picolinate / Polynicotinate

Isotonic Electrolyte replenishing beverage like Bill Gookin's invention Gookinaid--which is now called vitalyte or hydralyte--not sure which.

  This is the End...

That's great, Judy!

If you review the archives here, I'm sure that you'll find several people

recommending adrenal support and magnesium... many times... :-)
