Yes, the cable modem is the item you need a backup for.
You can then just connect that to an "ethernet switch"
to get multiple connections to multiple PCs.

Someone here once mentioned that one particular model
of Comcast cable modem was better (noise-wise) than
the others, but I can't remember which one that was
(I have DSL, otherwise I would have bought one of
those).  It's probably in the archives...
