Where did you get that TracFone?
Have a friend who was looking for something along that lines, for emergencies.
Unfortunately, I don't know too much about them these days, as I haven't used
one myself in years.

To start with, you want to choose the least harmful phone you
can find. I've got an LG 100C (TracFone), which seems perfectly
fine to me (compare this to an iPhone, which is terrible).
However, your family probably won't like this, as it doesn't have
a large screen, no camera, probably doesn't text well, and is
only 2G.
Next thing is to keep the phone turned off as much as possible.
Any GPS tracking should be disabled.
Use the speakerphone.
And keep calls to a minimum.
