Hi Cheryl,
In mainstream medicine, they call it "autoimmune or hashimoto's", I believe.
They never bother to explain what's actually happening. (big surprise).
The thryoid gland is extremely sensitive. It doesn't take much to throw it out of balance. And there are stages of thryoid stress. With some, the thryoid will go into over action, this is called: hyPER-thyroid, per meaning too much. With others, the thryoid down cycles, this is called: hyPO- thyroid, not enough. Either way, whether its over ACTIVE, or UNDER active, this is still telling you that there is somethng out of balance with the thyroid gland. Both condtions can share many similarities. Both can cause thinning hair, puffy eyes, digestive problems, candida problems, dry skin, flaky scalp, etc. Usually those with an under active (hyPO-thyroid) will have low energy while the hyPER thryoid condition will be alot of energy, but of a more nervous kind of energy. Both will tend to fog the brain, so lack of clarity, poor memory effects both conditions, as with being overly emotional, crying easily, stressing out easily, etc. The two things I see commonly as the differences betw over active and under active is this: with under active, the person is COLD all the time. With over active, the person is too hot. This isn't surprising, if you understand that the thryoid contrls the body's temperatures, it is the thermostat of the body. When its cold, the body calls for more heat. When its hot, a healthy body can tolerate the heat without being over heated. Also, weight issues. With under active, the body tends to gain weight, unless the adrenals are severely effected, in which case, the person can lose weight. With over active, the metablolism is speeded up, and the person may be able to eat like a horse...the nervous energy, always having to move, burns calories. Both conditions tend NOT To sleep well, or deeply. Sometimes, people's thryoid can swing b ack and forth...up and down. This signals that the body is trying to balance itself, but is unable too. And I have seen people get stuck in the over active sometimes for long long periods of time. Then, all the sudden, the thryoid loses steam, and starts to down cycle, and the weight comes on....the symptoms become more severe, and the thryoid is now officially UNDER active. In the beginning of the stage, the thryoid if it starts out healthy and becomes stresses, may up cycle into the over active stage. This would be like stage one and two of thyroid distress. When the thryoid down cycles, it is now under active and this would be like stage threee and four. Sometimes it will get stuck in the over active and they call this "Graves Disease". This is where you will see the eyes bulge out, very unnatural. Mainstream usually ZAPS the thyroid is these cases, they think radiatiing the thryoid and killing a part of it, is the answer. (NOT!) Then the person will have to take thryoid meds for life. **When I describe thryoid stages, these are MY descriptions. What people need to understand is that both the thryoid gland and the adrenal glands play a HUGE role in immune health. These two glands work together.

An excellent book to read on the thryoid is:

GAPS (Gut and Psychology Syndrome)
by McBride

http://www.gaps.me/

Talks about how too much adrenal stress, cortisol deteriorates the stomach lining which causes reduced stomach acid, lowered food digestion, pancreatic problems, and feeds the whole cycle of thyroid problems, hair loss, etc.

She bases all back to gut probiotics as the ultimate source.
