Regarding Faraday cages, they are the most weird issue for me! I am very happy to hear the stories like yours as that proves me I am not crazy with similar observations! Faraday cages are often worse than staying unprotected.
Just to make it more weird, to mention that for my stays in wilderness I have a special all plastic trailer (camper) as I wanted to be sure to have no metal plates arround, so to avoid possible effects that we observe inside Faraday cages. There in wilderness there is no low freq hum, but the high one still can be observed, despite very low readings at the meters. So in wilderness there are places which keep me awake, like you have described, but I do rest there (!?), and most rare places are those that calm me down and enable full rest and deep sleep.
I don't know where all that comes from, and what is the explanation, but have some rather bold hypothesis.
I must say I am sorry for I missed to start a work group particularly dedicated to such issues, as I had announced, but I am still having it on my schedule and hope to make it soon. I believe that any progress in ES understanding would be strongly correlated with these questions. EMF readings are just a part of the issue, that can be called "environmental sensitivity"...
Andrew has made a good description in his recent message.
