I assume you feel this difference with a particular piece of
equipment -- either a specific television set, digital
converter box, cable box, etc.?  

What I'm suggesting is that if you had a different brand/model
of television, digital converter box, cable box, etc., you might
not notice any difference, or the frequencies that seem worse
with one set of equipment may be better with a different set
of equipment.

As for the iMac question -- probably good to buy from someplace
where it will be easy to return, and probably good if the iMac
does NOT have a universal power supply (in other words, it only
works with one voltage -- either 110v or 220v)
