If you have a good digital multi-meter, you can measure
electric fields by securing the probes to two balls of
foil, at some distance (like a foot or 2 apart).

If you have a high impedance amplifier like the old
"telephone listeners" you can make a probe from
an old set of headphones or whatever that can
plug into the input jack, and just separate the wires
a few inches. Then you can hear the fields.
