Yes, I found the Earthing mattress sheet to make things worse for me as
well, at least if I made direct contact with it.  Seems okay to have it
on the side of the bed, where it might intercept some EMF and move it
to the ground rather than let it get to you.

I suspect these things are bad because:

  a) they make you part of the "path to ground", so that all EMF is
     attracted to you

  b) they expose you to a polluted ground connection, loaded with
     high frequencies
