What do you mean, "inability to metabolize" (thyroid hormone supplements) ?
Do you mean that nothing happens?  Do you feel WORSE when you try them?

Many people have "normal" amounts of thyroid hormones, but they are still
hypothyroid everywhere except in the blood serum and the thyroid gland.

This situation is called "Hypothyroidism Type 2" -- aka: "Hypothyroidism
at the Cellular Level" (..rather than what's present in the blood stream).
...see:

Doesn't matter what your blood tests "say", if the thyroid hormone fails
to get out of the blood (in sufficient quantity), and enter your body's
100-trillion other cells -- where the hormone is absolutely required.

What prevents the thyroid hormones from entering the cells of the body in
"normal" amounts?  There are many known possibilities, including: --

"Metabolic syndrome" (insulin resistance and/or obesity), or a chronic
inflammatory or autoimmune disease (Arthritis, Crohns, Diabetes, etc.),
or high cholesterol or dyslipidemia, or chronic stress including that
caused by chronic or yo-yo dieting.. Also: --

Low cortisol.. Anemia.. Proportionally excessive levels of Reverse-T3..
Autoimmune antibodies ("Hasimoto's thyroiditis", which describes over
50% of all cases of hypothyroidism.) .. Mercury poisoning (e.g. from
silver amalgam dental fillings, and their sloppy replacement)..
Insecticide poisoning.. Chlordane sprayed in, and under your home
when it was built (outgassing for 50+ years).. Teflon poisoning from
Teflon coated pans.. Flame retardants, e.g. the PBDE in mattresses,
curtains, and computer housings.. PCBs.. Phthalates.. Dioxins..
