One of the websites I was reading noted that autopsies had shown
that a fairly substantial percentage of people showed the same
kind of nerve damage seen in MS, but these people did not have
the typical MS symptoms. So perhaps ES folks have some
of this damage?

There do appear to be supplements aimed precisely at rebuilding
the myelin sheath. For example:
