Hi Yildiz:

Rolling up any cord carrying alternating current (AC) will increase the strength of the electric and magnetic fields in the vicinity of the roll. The main reason for this is that the fields are reinforced by each roll since the current flow is in the same direction in adjacent wires in the roll.
Also probably not a good idea to have sensitive electronic equipment close to such rolls because of the effect of the radiated EMF interference from such rolls on the electronics.
Best bet is to get a cord of the right length but if you must roll it up keep the roll as far away from yourself as possible.
If there is enough floor space and not too much extra cord then a zigzag pattern will have the effect of current flowing in the opposite direction in adjacent zigzags so that their EM fields are neutralized rather than reinforced. Roughly this is the way the EM field is neutralized at the main feeder line where the electric power is connected to and enters at the side of a house. When this is done much lower levels of EM radiation are measured inside the house close to the electric meter.

Subject: [eSens] question about long extension cord

Hi all,

I need to use an extension cord for some of my appliances.I have an extension cord which is quite longer than I need. I am worried of that longer cord might generate more EMF than the shorter one.I am thinking of using it by rolling the cord thightly at some part of it to shorten it. If we roll the cord to shorten it shall we still have high EMF? Or should I buy a shorter cord to minimize EMF that will be generated.
Thanks in advance.
Best wishes.
