Someone told me to put jugs of water in the refrigerator to take up space so it doesn't run as often. Hard to tell a difference so far...Anyone know if this works? The less it runs, the better. Thanks.

Just turn off the refrigerator at night and during the day when you need to be nearby. Nothing happens to the food.

I bought a bunch of blue ice cubes and some of those Techni Ice Sheets http://www.techniice.net/ and I put them in the freezer and the refrigerator when I turn it off at night so it stays cold longer. You can get the Techni Ice Sheets at Amazon and Ebay for less. I got mine at a Garage Sale for $1.00.
I am also thinking about moving it, but have not checked to see if it is a special plug. Do newer refrigerators run less and make less noise than the older ones? I have one that is about 20 years old. If I get a new one, will it run less and have less EMF or more? Every time the dam thing cycles on, I know it is electrifying the cells in my body to cycle on and off. Very unhealthy. C. New ones run quieter. We bought a used 08 model. We lucked out but didn't realize it at the time. Unfortunately, it has a data port. Our's has a communication issue, & the light & the data port don't work. When they tried to fix it, the motor didn't run, so took the new part out that ran the lights. Maybe look for an 07 model. As to "new" refrigerators....you might want to check them very carefullly for many have the new smart sensors in them. Bad news! If you are going to buy a new one, I hope you will consider a DC fridge powered from a bunch of DC batteries, not AC or inverted from DC to AC.
That is direction I am going. I am sorry I cannot provide complete details as I only have a small one and not a large one. I have the large battery system but am still working out the wiring to and from. Give me a few more months to figure out the whole system and I'll tell you how it is. But please just don't go out and buy an expensive new AC one. AC is part of the problem, to me. Carries all kinds of weird stuff from the outer world as well as 60 hz and carrier waves, etc. and uses a god-awful amount of power. DC uses so much less. It's just expensive to go DC. Lot's of stuff to buy. Thank you, Andrew On Oct 26, 2011, at 3:16 PM, C.a.b. Johnson wrote: > If I get a new one, will it run less and have less EMF or more? Lizzy,
I looked at it, it has wires coming up from the outside of the door that hook up to the white thing that looks like some kind of port. I may have been wrong. I looked up the manual that tells me nothing. We don't have access to any of the LED controls since that part circuit doesn't work. I miss the light inside. Is it safe to put a battery light in? It's a drag, we use a flashlight. It cools well. How about putting the refrigerator plug on a switch that turns off when one is around and turns back on when one is not around. I think I've heard of using a timer switch for that (one without dirty electricity itself). I think I've also heard of someone ES who had set up an infrared sensor to sense when a person is around and shut off the refrigerator at that time. There's also some amish? company selling refrigerators that don't work on AC.

Thanks for all the tips. Newer refrigerators are more efficient but also may be self-defrosting which cd be noisier. I think the noise bothers me as much as emf. I'll look into a timer...I just didn't know how long it can go w o affecting the food? I do have it set on the lowest setting.

The timer that Emil is suggesting says that it is to be used for SMALL appliances. The specs say it is an 8.3 Amp, 300 Watt Tungten, 120V, 60Hz timer.
You can buy what they call a Heavy Duty appliance timer cheaper at Amazon. It is a 15 Amp, 120V, 1800 Watt Tungsten. So it has similar specs as the Less EMF model so I assume can both be used on a refrigerator. But of course, the Less EMF one is Digital and the Sylvania one is Manual with pins, making worth the extra $5.00. http://www.amazon.com/Sylvania-SA110-Heavy-Appliance-Timer/dp/B000DZC226 Or buy the Manual Sylvania timer cheaper at: http://www.globalindustrial.com/p/electrical/timers/electromechanical/heavy-duty-aplliance-timer?utm_source=amaz_shop&utm_medium=shp&utm_campaign=Electromechanical-Timers-amaz_shop&infoParam.campaignId=T9I Since the plug-in socket on the cord end of the Less EMF timer is not pictured, it is hard to tell if the refrigerator plug would fit in it or if it is 3 prong. I assume it is. Of course, the cord is not shielded or else it would cost more Just FYI, I read that when plugging an extension cord or a timer cord into the refrigerator, it is absolutely necessary that it be "a UL/CSA listed 3 wire cord that the current carrying rating of the cord in amperes be equivalent to, or greater than, the branch circuit rating." I assume the Less EMF timer cord is UL/CSA rated? Most, if not all 110-120 volt appliances must be on a dedicated line. This means nothing else on the same line or plug. "Low voltage can be a problem. Stall voltage for a 110-120 volt AC motor is 100 volts. If the line voltage drops below 100 volts AC, the motor can/will fail and possibly damage the motor. Too many things on one line can drop the line voltage below the stall point." If anyone buys the Less EMF timer, tell us how it works out. Here is a good website explaining how your Refrigerator works: http://www.repairclinic.com/Refrigerator-How-Things-Work --- On Thu, 10/27/11, Emil at Less EMF Inc <[hidden email]> wrote: From: Emil at Less EMF Inc <[hidden email]> Subject: Re: [eSens] Re: refrigerators To: [hidden email] Date: Thursday, October 27, 2011, 5:54 PM > ps - can anyone suggest a link for a suitable appliance timer? > blessings, > Charles/Paresh http://www.lessemf.com/emf-appl.html#735 Emil [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

> Are laptops much better? I'm here to learn. Baby steps....
It's always difficult to make generalizations about these things, because laptops range from good to bad (in terms of tolerability for a particular person), as do cellphones. So you could probably find a particular laptop that is better than a particular cellphone for a particular person, but I suspect that you could find a particular cellphone that is better than a particular laptop. But in general, laptops are preferred over cellphones because you can use them with an ethernet cable instead of communicating wirelessly with a cellphone tower. And desktops are preferred over laptops because you can move the CPU and monitor further away from you, so you are only in close contact with the keyboard and mouse. Although some people still like laptops better than desktops, because you can use a laptop while it is being powered by a battery. Marc |
Laptops have similar ports as desktops, so you can use them further away, just as with a desktop. You could use a remote monitor, keyboard, and mouse instead of that built-in to the laptop.
Only bad thing is I found that my monitor goes to sleep erratically when my laptop is not plugged into power. It may be particular to my laptop. So when I use it on battery, I prefer the laptop's own monitor at a distance, w/ usb keyboard. Otherwise, I have to keep on resetting the monitor. > But in general, laptops are preferred over cellphones because > you can use them with an ethernet cable instead of communicating > wirelessly with a cellphone tower.
