Hi - Haven't posted in a while...my emf isn't as bad as it was.
I've been using a laptop with good results & will need a new computer within a year. Are there any desktop computers that are better than others re emf, & that don't use fans? I'd like to try a desktop computer since I can get a lot more for less money. Are the solid state hard drives any better or worse? Thanks. blessings, Paresh http://home.earthlink.net/~sunmoonyoga/ [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |
If you have any chemical sensitivities a new computer will likely cause problems as it heats up and all the plastic and everything else off-gasses. As far as EMFs go a while back I got a Dell monitor that was designed to be low-EMF (made for Sweden where they have strict EMF standards). It was a huge huge help. As far as the computers themselves, I don't know if any are worse than others.

Thank you!

And a desktop may be better than a laptop since the laptop is normally much closer to your body. But I haven't tried using a laptop since I became sensitive, so maybe others could tell you if they are indeed worse.

But I prefer desktops for the reason you state -- it is easier to get away from the CPU and the monitor, leaving you only close to the keyboard and mouse. Also, this gives you the freedom to experiment with the most tolerable CPU, the most tolerable monitor, the most tolerable keyboard, and the most tolerable mouse... Marc |

Hmmm, I recently bought a Dell U2410 monitor and after only a short amount of use (a couple hours or less), I was getting headaches, nausea, and loos bowel movements. I bought this new, so I don't really know if this was an EMF issue or an offgassing issue. But I did return it, and went back to my Sony 26" HDTV that's never been much of a problem (KDL-26S3000) Marc |

Apple computers have less toxins than other brands. I have a Mac Mini and I can't even tell it's there. Quiet as a mouse too.

Could you post the specific monitor you got? I ordered a monitor a few
years back that met the Swedish TCO specs, but I found it to be pretty bad, probably due to the RF emissions (MHz). FitPC makes small desktops. I don't know how their latest model is. I do think SSD is better than a hard drive, though they are expensive if you need a lot of space, and not too clear how long they last... I wouldn't be surprised if it was the chemical off-gassing. Monitors and computers get really hot when in operation and there is all sorts of toxic stuff that is off-gassed. It's only a specific model of Dell that is low-emf. I'll try to see if I can find the one I bought and post a link.

Here is the monitor I have bought. Pricey but it has been worth it for me...
http://www.blockemf.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=755 Check out these links too... http://www.safelevel.com/index.html http://ww2.epeat.net/searchoptions.aspx I also have a glare shield and a UV/blue light shield over top of the monitor because my eyes are very light sensitive. These may help a little with blocking radiation as well. Unfortunately new monitors are really bad for off-gassing chemicals. But maybe you are not sensitive to that.
