my Faraday 'tractor'! [was canopy experiment]

Hud J O Ramelan
I have been very pleased with the Faraday cage type unit I constructed for sleeping.  I was looking at hoop tent designs and semi geodesic tents when I came across something quite similar to a hoop tent in design:  a 'chicken tractor'!!!   Basically, it is like an aluminium mesh 'row cover' or a cylinder chopped in half.  I used 3 lengths of pvc conduit which I bent into semicircular bows.  I drilled holes to accept the bow ends in a frame of 2x4's and then covered the entire thing with aluminium mesh.  With this set up I was able to place my entire queen sized mattress inside.  Recently I've decided to coat the entire thing with shellac prepared by dissolving shellac flakes in 95: ethanol.  Not only does shellac stick to anything; it also can effectively 'seal in' chemicals, odours, particles (etc) and is an excellent electrical insulator.  I was going to buy some AFM Safecoat 'Hardseal' but it is so expensive and after some research, I
discovered that shellac is one of the few things which can also be used to 'seal in' chemicals, odours...  It is often used in smoke damaged houses to get rid of the smell.

The shellac flakes are not too expensive.  The alcohol to dissolve it is the more expensive part but still way less than buying premade shellac (and less toxic!).  I'm trying to figure out the best way to spray the shellac onto aluminium mesh!  From the inside out, I guess [?]''

BTW, I built the Faraday Tractor for about $25.  It is 8 feet long by 6 feet wide by 4 feet high at the center.

Would you be willing to post a photo to yahoo files?
Does it need to be grounded?
Thank you

Lynn,

Sure I can post a photo of the Faraday tractor.  I just need to snap some pics first and figure out how to upload them!  ;>p  No, it doesn't have to be grounded to effectively shield against EMF's but it is definitely recommended to attach a ground wire to it; otherwise there could be issues with electrical voltage, I think.  Since I live in an apartment, I had to resort to locating a water pipe under the sink in the bathroom and wrapping some copper wire a few times around a copper water pipe.  I ran this wire along the baseboards and then used an alligator clip to make a connection with the tractor.

I should mention that first I measured the water pipes with a sensitive digital multimeter to check for electrical current/voltage; there was none.

I'll try to get the pics up tomorrow.
