measuring electrical outlet with a multimeter

Hud J O Ramelan

Have been wanting to make a canopy or shielding for head when out and body when sleep also.
was going to measure with volt meter if sink is ok to ground to, but
how do you tell if it doesnt carry a charge? isnt all water and people electrical and can measure something?

I recommend finding a copper water pipe, roughing it up with some sandpaper or steel wool, wrapping some copper wire around it a few times; then securing it with some electrical tape.  Make it as long as you need to reach an electrical outlet.  Put an alligator clip on the end of the wire that isn't attached to the pipe.  You can clip this on to the black lead of a multimeter.  That should make you grounded.

Presuming that you have a multimeter that can safely be used to measure in the 120 V range (most multimeters are designed with this in mind, I imagine) you can then place the red lead into the left prong portion of the socket for a measurement.  Then the right prong portion.  Then the ground pin portion.  This will tell you which is the hot wire & which is the return; how much voltage is on the neutral return; & whether there is voltage on the ground pin, and whether that differs from the value on the neutral return.

You should turn off any appliances before measuring, check the neutral / return value and then try turning on some appliances and measure how much voltage is on the return, then.  It will likely increase with each appliance you turn on.

It is important to read the manual with the multimeter so you know how to use it properly.  I have an autoranging unit, which is nice because it is somewhat idiot proof and saves a lot of hassle.

Hope this is useful.
