I am electronically sensitive to the degree of bodily sickness,
aches, daily headaches, etc. Obviously I have no idea if this is due to something in my genetics, my diet, or my life experiences. My son is 4 and wears behind the ear hearing aids to help correct some of the sound loss that he has had since birth. Since the day we got the hearing aids the magnified effects of electromagnetic raidation he may live with and be bombarded with during critical years of development has been on my mind. I want to know if I am putting him at an increased risk. Is he getting the same kind of radiation as someone with 2 cell phones to their ears would all day? Are there any ways I can protect him from harmful EMF? Obviously, most doctors would laugh in my face if I asked these questions and I am intelligent enough to know they would be of no help in confirming/discrediting my fears. I now am coming to the ES boards to ask for any and all input, suggestions, knowledge, etc regarding this subject. Feel free to express any opinions and direct me to any links or information you think may be of use to me. I welcome it all. Below is an excerpt from the product booklet given to me for the Oticon Vigo Pro Behind The Ear Hearing Aid Instruments giving the product specs. THIS IS REALLY OF NO HELP TO ME AND MIGHT AS WELL BE WRITTEN IN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE AS I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO INTERPRET IT. MY GREAT HOPE IS THAT ONE OF YOU OR MANY MAY BE ABLE TO OFFER INSIGHT! Honestly, it sounds pretty scary...and exactly like the tyopes of fields I try to avoid every day!Product approval, precautions and markings FROM THE OTICON VIGO PRO INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE MANUAL: The hearing instrument contains a radio transmitter using short range magnetic induction technology working at 3.84 MHz. The magnetic field strength of the transmitter is < -42 dBìA/m @ 10m. The emission power from the radio system is well below international emission limits for human exposure. For comparison, the radiation of the hearing instrument is lower than unintended electromagnetic radiation from for example halogen lamps, computer monitors, dishwashers etc. The hearing instrument complies with international standards concerning Electromagnetic Compatibility. Due to the limited size available on the instruments all relevant approval Thanks so much! Deidra |

I would think that hearing aids would not be nearly as bad as a cellphone, as a cellphone must transmit long distances. Also, the frequency listed for the hearing aid is much lower than the frequencies of cellphones, which again works in your favor. The big issue is that the hearing aids are used all day, every day. I don't know if it is practical to remove the hearing aids for parts of the day (or wear just one of them), but that might be good to reduce exposure. There are also a variety of companies which make EMF protective devices, however these are very hit & miss in being effective for people, so I wouldn't use one unless you really thought it was helping. Thank you Marc.
I really trust your advice and input and was really hoping you'd chime in. I've asked the same question in a few places and am getting some good input that's sparking some ideas, so hopefully I'll be able to protect my son as much as possible. I can say at the least that holding him while he's wearing both hearing aids has NO effect on me personally....so I can only hope that's a good sign! Thanks for the welcome!
