Just replied to Jill's question off list, but in case there are
others in the group who, like me, are complete beginners at this, let
me just say that hiring an electrician for an hour to test our
outlets cost us less than $150. What we bought was a diagnosis of our
wiring situation and instructions on how to handle the grounding
project ourselves (very simple). If you are willing to spend more
then you can let the electrician do all the work so you don't have
to. If you want to be able to check that the work was done correctly,
a circuit tester (available at most hardware stores) costs less than
$15.
