cpu case - stainless steel

iedbunnie
MY FRIEND FOR AN EARLY CHRISTMAS PRESENT GAVE ME A CPU CASE THAT IS
STAINLESS STEEL.
HE WAS HOPING THIS WOULD HELP WITH THE SENSATIONS THAT GO UP MY LEG
WHEN I PUT THE COMPUTER ON. WHEN THE CPU CASE IS ON THE FLOOR
IT'S NOT WORKING ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS WHY THE STAINLESS STEEL CASE IS
NOT WORKING TO BLOCK OUT THE LEG SENSATIONS?

There are many types of stainless Steel. Some will offer some magnetic field shielding, some will not.
Test by seeing if a magnet will stick to it. If it does, it will offer some magnetic shielding.
Of course, that (magnetic fields) may not be what is causing your leg symptoms anyway.

Stainless, among metals, is one of the worst conductors.
Of course it's far better than plastic.

Make sure there's a 3 prong plug, and that your outlet is really grounded.
If the ground wire is grounded but horribly contanimated (which is common,
since it's usually "bonded" to the power company neutral) the metal case
could conceivably make that effect worse. It's also quite possible the
problem
is from the cables, keyboard, mouse or monitor.

The magnetic shielding is probably less than 3db at low frequencies.

It's not an easy problem to solve. But start by just trying to get
everything
including power cords and cables further from your legs.

Bill, how can I lengthen the cords?  Where can I get the longer cords?

You can buy longer computer cables or extension cables online from a
variety of places. You just need to figure out how long of a cord/
extension you need, and what kind of cables you have. For example,
computers and mice either use USB or PS/2 cables, and monitors
mostly use VGA or DVI cables. You could probably just do a Google
search on something like "VGA extension cable", etc.

Cables to Go has a good website and catalog. I would buy either
their medium grade or high-end cables. They have good shielding.
But again if the ground wire is contaminated the best shielding in
the world may not solve problem.

If you can spare the cash then fiber optic is
the way to go. You can place the computer as far
away as you want. Unlike wires, fiber won't
transmit the noise from the computer to the
keyboard, mouse and monitor.

Extend DVI and USB over fiber for a measly $1,999.00.

And with that, you can have your monitor up to 10 km
away! It definitely won't be causing any problems
at that distance... :-)
