broadband options

April R
My mom is threatening to update our dial-up AOL connection stuff by the end of the week because that's when our protection expires and everything's been getting so slow but the last time we did it, the internet was so physically painful that I couldn't stand to be anywhere _near_ the computer while the connection was on for several months!  We've thought of trying fiber optik before because, unlike cabled services, you can actually turn it off.  Is anyone else on here using fiber optik and if so do you like it? (please hurry, she said she'd put it off until Saturday so I could ask you guys)

I think we had someone here who had the fiber optic installed and they
said it was much worse than what they had before.   Presumably the
problem is not within the fiber optics, but rather the device that
converts it back to something usable by your computer.

Aside from the disappointment of the equipment being too noisy. I have
to ask, why does it need to be plugged in 24/7 ?
What happens after a power outage? Like those do happen! So if it
happens to your home more frequently, why would they care?
