Regarding the utility meters (elec, gas & water) that send out readings
via radio transmitters, I found out a little about the alternative type
which uses a "wired" phone line connection. A company called Badger
Meter has such a system called ACCESSplus. It's mostly being phased out
however, because many people are giving up their standard phone
connection in favor of using cellphones all the time. I don't buy this
argument though because almost everyone is also wired for cable TV
and/or computer service; seems like they could connect through one of
those.
